We Love Soap -- humble beginnings

Hi, my name is Andi, and I've been obsessed with soap since the age of 2.

That's right, while most parents hate to take their toddlers to the grocery store for fear of their child throwing a temper tantrum in the candy or cookie aisle, my folks avoided taking me to the store because I would throw a fit if I was not allowed to smell every. single. bar of soap.

In 2000 I discovered Zum bars, which was my first experience with cold process soap, and I was hooked. Here were bars of soap that got you clean, left you moisturized, and smelled good enough to eat! Around the same time period, I learned that you could craft cold process soap in your own home! While it took me a few years to get up the nerve to make my own (lye is scary!), once I did I would NEVER go back.

We Love Soap -- where we are now

In December of 2011, three months after being laid off from my job, I started my handmade soap company, We Love Soap.

We Love Soap currently makes soaps and lip balms. My products are healthy for both people and the environment -- no sodium laureth or lauryl sulfates and no parabens.

In just over a month's time, I have registered as a business in the state of Michigan, received an EIN, created a website, had a logo designed, and made 25 lbs. of soap and 150 lip balms.

It's a good start, but there's still quite a bit I need to do before opening my online store March 1st and starting the local farmer's market and craft show circuits in April. That's where you come in.

We Love Soap -- the future

I would like to raise $2500 before April, when I will be starting the local farmer's markets and craft show circuits.

Here's a breakdown of what that money would go towards:

  • $300 - 'The Tank' soap cutter
  • $450 - paper and containers (bags, stickers, lip balm containers, business cards, shipping materials, etc.)
  • $500 - liability insurance
  • $550 - more soap molds and other equipment
  • $700 - ingredients

I'd like to tell you about each of these, briefly, so you know where I am getting my numbers:

'The Tank' soap cutter is widely considered the best soap cutter for the small soap business. It cuts 12 perfectly even bars of soap at once. Right now, I am cutting my soap the old-fashioned way -- one bar at a time with a blade, which means extra time and not-quite-even bars.

Paper and containers is pretty straight forward. However, I want you to know that I plan on using 100% recycled brown kraft bags, recycled shipping materials (e.g. shredded paper, recycled or reused boxes), and biodegradable shrink wrap.

Liability insurance protects both my family and yours if (God forbid!) someone experiences injury as a result of my products.

More soap molds and other equipment will allow me to make larger batches of soap at a time and it will also enable me to add more products to my product line. At this time I am making soaps and lip balms, but I would also like to produce solid lotions, bath salts, bath bombs, and solid perfume.

Ingredients are what makes the product -- and I want to make great products! This amount of money will allow me to buy enough ingredients that I can survive as a profitable business for about a month and a half; after which I should be able to support myself through profits alone. Even more importantly, it allows me to buy my ingredients in large enough quantities that I will be able to purchase organic olive oil and organic coconut oil, as well as organic AND sustainable palm oil* without increasing the cost of my products!

We Love Soap -- a few closing thoughts

  • As a reminder, if my Kickstarter isn't fully funded, I don't get any money. But don't worry -- you don't lose any money, either!
  • If I am lucky enough to get OVER-funded, I plan on using the money to attend the 2012 Handcrafted Soapmaker's Guild Conference in Portland, Oregon. This would be an amazing opportunity to learn more about soapmaking and to network with other soapmakers! Information about the conference can be found here: http://bit.ly/p1Tg7b. Any money in excess of that goal would be used to make a designated soap workshop in my basement.
  • Your rewards will arrive by May 1, 2012 -- just in time for Mother's Day!
  • I update my blog several times a week with soap recipes and business news. If you'd like to learn more about me or my business, you should check it out! http://welovesoap.com

Thank you for taking the time to read this, and for considering my Kickstarter!

*Palm oil is a great oil for making soaps -- it makes soaps very hard and long lasting, while still providing great lather. Unfortunately, "palm oil production has been documented as a cause of substantial and often irreversible damage to the natural environment. Its impacts include deforestation, habitat loss of critically endangered species such as the Orangutan and Sumatran Tiger and a significant increase in greenhouse gas emissions." Sustainable palm oil avoids these tragic consequences of palm oil production.
