Announcing XOXO Arcade
During the radio silence, we've been planning all kinds of amazing, wonderful things for XOXO. We're ready to announce one of them today: XOXO Arcade.
On the night of Friday, September 14, we're hosting an indie game arcade curated by Venus Patrol, the Kickstarted gaming site created by Independent Games Festival chairman and former Offworld.com editor Brandon Boyer. (You can read Brandon's announcement on his own project.)
All but one of the games are publicly unavailable, either unreleased or exhibited only at events, and most of the game's designers will be attending to show them off. Topping off the night, we'll have a live performance by Disasterpeace, composer of the gorgeous FEZ soundtrack.
Unlike the conference, XOXO Arcade will be open to the public, held at Union/Pine, a short walk from the main XOXO festivities. We'll release more details about attending as we finalize them.
Until then, here's the list of confirmed games for XOXO Arcade!
NIDHOGG — Winner of last year's Nuovo Award at the GDC, Nidhogg is a brutally fast-paced swordfighting game for two players. Best enjoyed in public, it only appears at events and can't be played any other way. Messhof aka Mark Essen joins us from Los Angeles to show it off.
PROTEUS — Pushing the boundaries of traditional gameplay, Proteus is a currently-unreleased game of exploration and discovery by Ed Key with a reactive soundtrack by composer David Kanaga, who will be attending XOXO Arcade. Winner of last year's Indiecade Audio category, Proteus was nominated for this year's IGF Nuovo Award. Access to the early Windows beta is available with preorders.
BARABARIBALL — Like a psychedelic Super Smash Bros. meets Volleyball for the NES, BaraBariBall is a competitive sports game for two or four players created for NYU Game Center’s No Quarter exhibition. Its creator, Noah Sasso, will be joining us from Brooklyn, NY.
BIG BUCKET'S NEW GAME — Big Bucket Software, the creators of Mac/iOS the-8bit-sky-is-falling platformer The Incident, haven't announced their new game yet, but will be previewing it exclusively for the first time at XOXO Arcade. Portland-based designer Neven Mrgan will be joined by partner Matt Comi, flying in from Perth, Australia (!) to attend.
SUPER HEXAGON — Terry Cavanagh, the Irish madman behind games like VVVVVV and the world's only kitty MMO, built the hypnotic and addictive Hexagon in less than 24 hours. Super Hexagon is the unreleased sequel, fleshing Hexagon into into a full game playable at XOXO Arcade.
JOHANN SEBASTIAN JOUST — Played without a screen, Joust is played with up to seven players using Playstation Move motion controllers set to Bach's Brandenburg Concertos. When the music plays in slow-motion, the controllers are extremely sensitive to movement. When the music speeds up, you can dash at your opponents to knock them off guard. The goal's to be the last person standing, forcing your opponents to move their controllers without moving your own. Created by Die Gute Fabrik in Copenhagen, the Indiecade award winner can only be played in person, and we'll be playing the newest build from the developers, administered by Portland's own Incredible Ape.
