What’s Wattvision?

Wattvision is an energy sensor and mobile app that helps you save money on energy by giving you a live view of your energy use. By setting goals and tracking your spending in real-time, you’ll never be surprised by your energy bill again. Wattvision is designed with a great end-to-end user experience in mind. How does it work?

Wattvision works by gathering data from your electricity meter -- that funky device that wasn’t designed by user experience experts. Setup is easy: just surface-mount your Wattvision Energy Sensor to the outside of your meter, connect the Wattvision Gateway to your network, and then go online on your computer or mobile device to see and analyze your real-time energy data.

If you have an analog meter, our analog sensors will watch and time the rotations of the disk inside your meter. Each rotation marks a fixed quantity of energy used by your house. If you have a digital meter, our digital sensor will read the infrared pulses emitted by your meter that also mark the energy coming from the grid. Your sensor sends the data through your home network (via the Wattvision Gateway), to Wattvision servers. You can then view the data live on your mobile device, on your computer, or anywhere you choose. Look at historical trends in your energy use, receive e-mail and text message alerts, and track your home’s overall efficiency compared to similar homes.

Unlike most systems, there is no electrician required to set up Wattvision! Because we connect to your meter, we track your whole home's energy use -- not just one outlet or one appliance!

How can I use Wattvision?

• Save money by setting daily energy spending goals, and track your progress against these goals in real-time. 
• See if the green changes you make are actually making a difference.
• Compare and rank your home with similar homes across the country.
• Find energy-draining devices, including faulty appliances.
• Receive alerts and catch problems before you get an unusually high energy bill.
• Use our API to integrate data into your home automation system or send to other 3rd party services for detailed analysis.

The Project: Wattvision 2

We have great feedback from our amazing early adopters across the country, and we’re ready to act on this feedback and expand Wattvision to more users. That’s where you come in, Kickstarter.

We’ve started work on Wattvision 2: a complete remake of our hardware from the ground up, that features broader compatibility, more networking options, higher reliability and even easier setup. But we can’t make this happen without your support.

With a successful kickstarter campaign, we’ll be able to:

• Complete development of Wattvision 2
• Make a large production run to get Wattvision 2 in your hands
• Expand our reach to more types of power meters -- our goal is ALL meters

+Most of our customers have discovered phantom loads, appliances which periodically turn on and off and cost money in the background, and then added schedules or made adjustments.  With Wattvision you can see how much it costs you to run anything from a light bulb to a microwave to a hair dryer.

API

Wattvision allows you to download data as fast as we receive it, through our download API. Pretty neat stuff. Researchers and third parties have already shown that it’s possible to take whole house data and break it down by appliance, a scenario we’re excited to enable.

While we make strides to use clean and renewable energy in the future, it’s vital to remember that the cleanest energy is the energy we never use. One of the most important steps towards improving our energy habits is simply to cut down on our existing energy use, and we can do that by first knowing where we stand.
