Synopsis

Negative Space is an intimate and personal film about the difficult ins and outs of family relationships, where emotional stakes are often at their highest. How do we treat the people that we love? What secrets do we keep from them and why? What happens when these secrets come out? When a married couple gets an unannounced visit from the wife's younger sister, deep and unexpected issues boil to the surface and threaten to upend and destroy even the closest relationships. 

The Inspiration

We were initially inspired by the films and process of British director Mike Leigh as well as the writing and techniques developed by author and teacher (and old family friend of Ben’s) Viola Spolin. Leigh and Spolin both emphasize trust, exploration, and fearlessness. In this spirit, we have jumped headfirst into the process of creating an original and truthful film, one built through artistic collaboration and trust.

The process

We have been working over the course of the last several months, through rehearsals consisting of extended improvisation and discussion. Starting with character construction, the dynamics of the relationships between the characters began to form our story. The story evolved into a script and it is from that which we’ll be working once we start principal photography. From the very beginning we knew that the only way to do something like this, especially on such a limited budget, is to work in a truly collaborative fashion, bringing the film into existence organically, and sincerely, through a community of artists all focusing their individual talents on the same goal.

Because of the generosity that we have received, including a top of the line camera and lighting package as well as a superb location, our needs are not many. Our main goal is to put together enough funds to keep our cast and crew well fed and compensated, as well to be able to ensure a smooth post-production process. In order to complete the necessary financing for this film, we are turning to you to help us reach our remaining funding goal of $10,000.
