The "Women's Day of Freedom" film (as is was previously titled) was started with $500 from people who donated $20-150. With the $500, we were able to host a party for all 60 wives from a small village near Nagarkot. The money covered expenses for renting the bus, cooks, equipment, food (including an entire goat), prizes, and renting the party grounds.  The party was a huge success, despite the fact that the husbands, at the last minute, prevented their wives from bringing the homemade rice whiskey.

The Woman's day of freedom picnic inspired the film which became a portrait of this all changing moment in the history of Nepal. The older generation will never be saved, while the new generation of women are coming into a recently turned communist government. This new institution educates women and treats them equally, therefore this excited new generation is growing up to be the prodigy's of tomorrow who are hungry for education and change.

Your support will help finish the film and share the stories of these women with the world.

The filming started with an interview with our friend Durba whose idea it was to raise money for a party to honor the women. He explained his idea and why it was important to the women. I then filmed all around the village while, organizing the event. Dhurba and I talked to the male and female elders of the village. After filming, a friend of Durba's helped translate the footage. The event was held at a sacred temple ground called Dakshinkali. Kali is a powerful female Goddess. The event made the women very happy, especially considering that many of the women had never even been on a bus.

After the event we conducted a few more interviews and headed off to the Terai, known as the most conservative Hindu region of Nepal. I was invited to film a wedding and this experience was very unique because foreigners had never been to the village where the wedding was held. Later I interviewed two young women and discussed in detail the situation women young and old face in Nepal.

I am hoping to produce a 45-90 minute documentary with the current footage.  There are many more sides to the situation for women in Nepal and if you are interested in become an executive producer we will host your visit to Nepal and you can party with the women yourself.

Prior to leaving Nepal I discussed our next project with Dhurba. He suggested we take the women much farther, to the place of Buddhas birth, Lumbini.

The funding will support sound and color mastering, media printing, basic video editing equipment, film festival entries, and rewards for my backers.

FAQ

  • The highest goal for helping the women is to help the 2 girls get into medical school. I know that the girls will be very enthusiastic to participate/assist the fundraising in an ongoing way. Ideally this grant giving would be the end of the movie and the movie would make an ongoing commitment to fund the education of the older sister and then younger sister to get the education they want. They told me on camera that they can't get a good education because their family doesn't have the resources. The girls deserve help because of the way they asked me to do something about it and the reason they want to be doctors is to help the poor and give back to the country. The interview is being released (hopefully) today. The movie sales( downloads, DVDs, merchandise) via the website will make an ongoing commitment to raise money for the education the two mentioned girls and eventually other young women education projects.

  • The aim of the film is to shed light into a variety of subjects. Primarily the realities of women's struggles in Nepal which are very complex, sometimes progressive but often horrific. I would like the film to connect the viewer with these people and show their lifestyles and exceptional spirit. Thirdly I would like to demonstrate what can be done by one person about these types of problems.

  • The impact will mainly be the education of the 2 girls which as they said they have huge ambition to assist the poor and to be a 'famous doctor'. In other words, trying to make the dream come true of the girl and her sister who really made the film with their participation. Other impact will be a connection for both sides - the West and the women in Nepal. I find that people in Asia tend to appreciate the opportunity to get connected through modern forms of communication, that is why the level of local participation was so strong to make this film.

  • People with passports, a degree, and middle to high income women from Europe and America. As a sub target I would have to say men of the same categories because I want men to see the importance and possibilities of male effort on the women's movement front. Any person who enjoys documentaries/film with Do It Yourself spirit. As far as film screening outreach I will make a strong effort to captivate college age men and women.

  • To finish and publish the film I am estimating $8000. So far I have raised $1340 on kickstarter.com leaving $6660 to raise by Dec 26th. If I raise 8k by this date I will get the funding but if I don't reach the 8k goal I will get none of the funding. To finish the film, finance the early tuition for medical school and continue shooting I would estimate $25,000. I spent months documenting the story but to truly capture the situation more footage would be hugely beneficial. Girls are being sold into slavery and many other insane issues are happening daily. My current footage can only demonstrate the issues through information but the people that appeared in the movie are actually some of the most progress examples in the country. In any case I am confident I could go back in and get some much more realistic coverage.
