About this project
WHAT IS WANDERING SOULS?
Wandering Souls is a new arts outreach company in Washington DC dedicated to finding ways to help make the arts accessible to everyone.
At the core of this work is a belief that the arts can fuel our imagination, encourage our personal growth and help unite individuals and communities. Yet, the richness of the arts is often considered a luxury. And we want to help break down that misconception!
HOW DO WE DO THIS?
We create stripped-down, high energy, professional productions and then...
- We tour the show to places in the city who might have the least access to the arts (shelters, nursing homes, schools, community centers, etc)
- We offer additional general public shows at a variety of venues around the city for anyone to attend
- And admission is always FREE
IN ADDITION TO PERFORMING WE ALSO...
...believe that arts can help start conversations; and it's important to us that we take time to listen to and learn from our audiences. It could take the form of talking over coffee and cookies, a talk back about the show or playing theater games with kids.
OUR LAST SHOW
Last fall was our first tour with Shakespeare's The Winter's Tale - we visited 13 communities (nursing homes, shelters, after school programs, community centers and more) and played to almost 600 individuals and the responses and connections we made were incredible.
OUR NEXT STEP
Fall 2010 - We are touring a 1-hour version of Shakespeare's Twelfth Night with music, puppets and 8 of the area's finest actors (who, at this point, have all signed on for nothing more than a home cooked meal!)
WHY WE NEED FUNDING
With the $2500 we can:
- Continue to expand our network of performance venues
- Pay our artists for there travel and time (which last year was 80% of our budget and still only meant about $200 per artist for over 2 months of work)
- Maintain our website
- Purchase props and costumes from thrift stores
If we were to raise more then we could increase the number of places and people we bring the show; pay our artists a slightly better wage for there incredible time, energy and talent and possibly start creating a third production to go out sooner!

Send MessageI am the Artistic Director of a new arts outreach company, Wandering Souls, which is getting off the ground in DC. We are working to make the luxury of the arts more accessible to everyone but especially those who have little or no access. We bring professional production for free to shelters, schools, nursing homes, etc.
Eventually we would love to expand into other art forms...but for now with an actor at the helm this is what I know how to do.
