A one-man show about Frederick Douglass, an antidote to the cynicism of our times.
We are producing a one-man show about Frederick Douglass, an honorable man whose name may be familiar, but whose honorable deeds have been mostly forgotten.
Frederick Douglass was born into slavery on a plantation in Maryland in 1818. He escaped, educated himself, became a leader in the abolitionist movement, author, orator, social reformer, feminist, statesman, advisor to President Lincoln.
His was a time when the moral compass was defined. His life is a call to action in crucial times.
At the end of his life, Douglass said that the struggle was not over. His transformation from slave to man that was his life, was not finished.
With this production we will try to continue that conversation, to serve Douglass' vision.
We will bring this performance to places where it matters:
to prison populations in Columbia and Greene Counties
to high schools
and for a run at Space 360 in Hudson, NY.
We are Walking the dog Theater Co., Inc. (www.wtdtheater.org).
Phil Darius Wallace (www.Phildariuswallace.com), from Memphis, who inspired the project, will play Frederick Douglass; Adaptation and direction by Associate Artistic Director Melania Levitsky; Wesley Brown, author/playwright, consulting on the script. James Corbett Set and Costumes; Grace Foy on lights; Music by John McDowell, Denise Lock, Jonathan Talbot; Co-Artistic Directors, Benedicta Bertau and David Anderson.
The money we are raising is primarily for subsidizing prison and high school performances.
