Update #6: November already?
Hello lovely supporters,
I sit here stunned and amazed that November is already upon us. Hard to believe it has been 2 months since returning from the Grand Adventure that is Burning Man. The Portrait Project is underway, I've begun doing small studies from the photos taken at BM, (you can get a first look at all the new work by geting on the client list here: http://www.vlasicstudio.com/vlasicstudio.com/Guest_Book_%26_Contact.html ) and am this week starting on the first big painting. I will be giving a "sneak peak" of the series with one or two paintings in February, as I have been invited to be part of a group exhibit at CVA (Center for Visual Arts) here in Denver. Many of the photographs taken at BM are now online on the Facebook fanpage here, http://www.facebook.com/pages/Welcome-Home-A-Burning-Man-Portrait-Project/169502786438429 . I do hope your holidays are marvelous and joyful, and once again, thank you so much for supporting the project,
-M Vlasic
Update #5: 8 Days and counting...
Hello beautiful backers,
I hope this finds you well and happy. 8 days to go until this great adventure ensues, and the excitement is palpable. I have everything for the photo booth here and ready to go. I'm still learning the camera, but confident I'll have it down by next Saturday when we leave. The living room has become "Burning Man Central", piled with boxes and bins and bikes getting ready for the journey. You can read more on the website blog at http://thebmportraitproject.com/theBMportraitproject.com/Home_Page.html Remember I'll be posting daily (wifi willing) from the Playa on the blog and the Facebook page so you can follow along, and of course if you are going to Burning Man, I expect to see you at the Project Photo Booth at Whiskey & Dust, 7:30 & Divorce, 5-7pm Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday.
Did you get your bling? The bling has been mailed. If you did not get yours, please let me know and make sure I have your address.
Thanks again for your support of the project!

Update #4: Project Update for a Burning Man Portrait Project
Hello beautiful supporters,
Just wanted to drop you a line to tell you what's happening with the project. The bling has been ordered and will arrive by the end of the month. I plan to get them all packed up and shipped out to you the first week of August. The big news is I am hosting a fundraiser event on August 5th to raise the rest of the needed funds to get this project to the desert, so mark your calendars! It's going to be a remarkable evening with great DJs, live music (the amazing Ian Cooke will be playing, and more! ) aerial hoop performers, food from Watercourse, and an art exhibit and silent auction. Tickets should be available by the end of the week. Only $10 pre-sale ($15 at the door) I hope you can join us! In the meantime, you can always check out the project blog at http://thebmportraitproject.com/theBMportraitproject.com/Blog/Blog.html for the latest happenings. Thank you again for your support. I can't wait to get out there! The man burns in 60 days...

Artist Statement
I have a strange relationship with people. I am at once fascinated and repulsed. Fear and loathing with a joyful embrace. This duality in my at-odds psyche has turned into an obsession, one which I express the only way I know how, and that is to paint. When I render the human form, I am digging into the person, pulling out what and who they are. I want to show their insides, for better or worse. By pushing and pulling the paint, the light and the shadow, I am laying them, and myself, bare on the canvas. It is my attempt to find the humanity, the God-spark, in them, and in me.
There is nothing more beautiful and horrible and lofty and base as a human being, and for me, no other subject worthy of deep exploration. I feel my soul in painting the human form, and so the flesh is always calling me.
Only oil paint will do for me. I fell in love with the medium, with it’s soft, sensual feel and rich intensity of color in my first college painting classes. I paint thin, in many successive layers. This time-consuming technique gives my work a luminous quality. Because of the brief, expressive nature of the images I am creating, I work from photographs, many taken myself and some in collaboration with local photographers.
I am often asked which painting is my favorite. The answer, the one I am doing now. The process of watching each work unfold, the moment when the flat canvas begins to breath, that is the fuel that drives me to keep creating.
Thank you for your interest,
-M Vlasic
