I am excited beyond words to announce the official launch of a very large year & a half long art project, Welcome Home: a Burning Man Portrait Project

($4000 is the minimum I'll need to do this project, over-funding is greatly appreciated! (Follow the project on the website blog) www.aburningmanportraitproject.com

“Welcome Home.” These are the first words you here when you arrive at the gates of Burning Man. It is a Home like no other, transporting it’s eager participants into a world unknown and incomprehensible to outsiders. Participants are released from the bonds of their daily lives. They are free to express themselves in all manner of ways creative, bizarre and joyful. The experience of Burning Man can be life-changing for many people, and is at the very least, profound and extraordinary. It is almost unimaginable what is created out there in a temporary city of art and lavish experience, literally in the middle of nowhere, in the dust, wind and heat. However what truly creates this event is the people. Burning Man is at its core an event created by incredible people willing to brave the harshest of environments to bring their particular form of creation and expression to the community, to truly let their hair down, recreate themselves and share an experience that can be had no where else on the planet. It is these people that participate in this glorious act of communal creation that inspired me to create "Welcome Home: a Burning Man Portrait Project*." A Burning Man Portrait Project* is an art project including a series of exhibited paintings and an art book, the creation of which will be chronicled by a blog and a short documentary video. This project will be funded by your generous donations. Follow the project from start to finish on the website blog. Thank you for supporting the Arts.

Project Details: (a more detailed description can be read on the website)

What is a Burning Man Portrait Project? A Burning Man Portrait Project is a multi-phase art project by professional fine artist Marie Vlasic consisting of an Art Exhibit (paintings), Blog/Website, Book, & Video

Art Exhibit (paintings) The Portrait Project is a series of paintings of the “Children of the Dust”, the people of the Burning Man community. The people at the event are very unique, not just in their commonly outrageous dress (or undress) but their countenance, their demeanor, is unique to the event.  It is my intention to focus on the individual, to capture them by visually separating them from the over-stimulating surroundings by a white backdrop. The “models” will be photographed on-site, and the paintings will be created from these photographs during the year following the event. A solo show of the paintings has been scheduled at Walker Fine Art in Denver in September 2012. (more gallery exhibits TBA) The opening night of the exhibit will be an event in itself, giving visitors a taste of Burning Man (see website for more details)

Blog/Website The entire process of a Burning Man Portrait Project, from beginning to end, will be written about and photographed in a blog which will be part of the website dedicated to the project. Portions of the blog will be printed in the book  “Welcome Home, a Burning Man Portrait Project”* (see below)

Book I will create a quality art book of the project, which will include images of the paintings, photos of the preparation and the event, as well as excerpts from the project blog.

Video A short-form video chronicling the project, from the preparations to the travel, the experiences at the event, the resulting creation of the paintings, and the hanging and opening of the show. The video will be available to view on the website and will be shown at the art exhibits.

Funding The funding for this project will be entirely from donations. This Kickstarter Campaign will cover the initial project expenses. Thank you for supporting the arts.

  • The models will get full access to the pictures taken of them on the Playa, and if funding allows, a nice piece of bling. If their image is chosen to be painted, they will get a signed, limited addition giclee' print of the painting. (all models will be asked to sign a model release)

  • The funds go towards everything from camera equipment, backdrop/reflectors, bling for the models, gas, RV, photo "booth" (an EZ Up canopy) at the camp, website fees, project-related printing, etc., but not book printing. That comes next year. I have put in nearly $2000 myself as well.

Artist Statement
I have a strange relationship with people. I am at once fascinated and repulsed. Fear and loathing with a joyful embrace. This duality in my at-odds psyche has turned into an obsession, one which I express the only way I know how, and that is to paint. When I render the human form, I am digging into the person, pulling out what and who they are. I want to show their insides, for better or worse. By pushing and pulling the paint, the light and the shadow, I am laying them, and myself, bare on the canvas. It is my attempt to find the humanity, the God-spark, in them, and in me.

There is nothing more beautiful and horrible and lofty and base as a human being, and for me, no other subject worthy of deep exploration. I feel my soul in painting the human form, and so the flesh is always calling me.

Only oil paint will do for me. I fell in love with the medium, with it’s soft, sensual feel and rich intensity of color in my first college painting classes. I paint thin, in many successive layers. This time-consuming technique gives my work a luminous quality. Because of the brief, expressive nature of the images I am creating, I work from photographs, many taken myself and some in collaboration with local photographers.

I am often asked which painting is my favorite. The answer, the one I am doing now. The process of watching each work unfold, the moment when the flat canvas begins to breath, that is the fuel that drives me to keep creating.

Thank you for your interest,
-M Vlasic
