Markings on Ground Glass is a project that examines the fragmentation that happens looking through a viewfinder.
Markings on Ground Glass is a project that explores viewfinders and focusing mechanisms which began with the examination of camera manuals. I am interested in how images appear through the viewfinder especially when the process of image making and looking has become quick and easy with digital technology.
Split screen focusing is an example of a fragmentation viewed through the viewfinder of a 35mm camera. If the image is split and unaligned as it appears through the viewfinder, the image is out of focus. Though the image appears split, the resulting image is blurry.

There is a falsehood of what is seen through the camera when looking through the viewfinder. The focusing rings or diagrams that guides how one should focus and frame an image varies from camera to camera, but does not appear in the final image. The final image is different from what one sees through the viewfinder of any camera.
By photographing reflections of mirrors etched with patterns from various viewfinders; I create photographs that resemble how an image looks through a viewfinder without it being filtered by a camera.
The resulting photographs is a culmination of work that resulted from experimenting with different ideas and materials.

What will the funds go towards? I am still in the process of shooting for this project, but for the final thesis show I will be showing two photographs. The money raised from this kickstarter will go towards mounting and printing for the show. Anything extra will help in rewarding my backers with prints and printing postcards for the show. Unless funded successfully, your account will not be charged until the end of the KickStarter date.
Choice of prints. The images above are a result of experimenting with different ideas and materials. You will have a choice of any of these limited edition prints to be rewarded with. I will update you if any new images are available as rewards. Limited edition of prints will be determined upon successful funding and number of backers. If you donate $75 or more, I will create a photograph exclusively for you.
What will the images look like? Below is a mock-up of what I will be showing. There will be two 24x30 prints mounted on sintra, dibond or plexi.
When is the show? I will be showing work alongside 52 seniors. The show will be located at Calumet Gallery from May 10th to May 20th, 2012.
THANK YOU in advance! Looking forward to bringing my thesis alive with your help and support.
