We can now Self Replicate! (with our Makerbot 3D printer)
Some short number of days ago, our MakerBot Replicator finally arrived in the mail!! It was a long and highly anticipatory wait, since the guys at MakerBot are working hard to fill demand for their awesome new product.
Once it arrived, after unboxing and some basic assembly required -- we had it up and running! The filament is mounted on a roll hidden in the back of the machine -- it's about the thickness of spaghetti. Once it feeds through the machine, it's melted at 220 degrees and spews out in layers just thinner than the finest Cappellini (Angel-hair Pasta) at just the right speed and alignment to stack on top of the previous layer, and create a complex 3D model! It takes about 2 hours to print a finished set of eyewear! So cool!!!!!!! Check out the short video of us making our first custom designed glasses -- starting from raw 3D geometry we modeled and ending with a real life actual physical object! This is so cool, things will never be the same. Welcome to the future people! AWESOMENESS!
