A feature documentary about UPA Pictures, the little studio that changed the course of animation around the world
Tom Sito hosts the video above, to introduce the Ottawa Animation festival audience to a UPA presentation, which serves as a perfect introduction to the studio our documentary will be focussing on. However, this is now being seen by many people living outside of Ottawa, but it's a great overview for everyone.
The documentary feature we have begun will cover the dramatic story of UPA Pictures, created in the early 1940s by artists on the 1941 Disney picket line, to it's virtual demise by the HUAC hearings and the intrusion of television in the late 1950s. The project is seeking finishing funds to create character designs for UPA artists, new animation of UPA characters, such as Mister Magoo and Gerald McBoing Boing, hire and record voice over talents, secure rights to UPA films, and cover travel costs for the last remaining interviews. There have been over 50 interviews filmed so far, and sequences have been edited. Our production team includes animation artists from around the world with several story artists from Pixar Animation in Emeryville, Califonria, with the editing and central production being done in Los Angeles. Much of the remaining production and coordination will be carried out via the internet.
