About this project
Dust and Shadows is a brand new take on a traditional murder mystery, taking the convention many steps past the route expected of such performances. The audience arrives for a séance to which they have been invited by a man they do not know. Once the audience arrives, the two major players in the performance enter, startled by the presence of other people. They have come to claim that which they feel is owed to them by the same man who invited the audience. Unfortunately, there is a catch – he's dead, and one of them must die if the other is to receive his reward.
Patrons who walk into this performance do not take a seat and watch as passive observers; rather, they are thrust into a central role for the evening and are invited to enter into the action, finding friends and enemies among the characters, affecting a plot that shifts and adapts to their presence—and ultimately are responsible for determining the fates of the characters themselves.
Dust & Shadows is part of the Unorthodox Arts foundation's current initiative, ‘Project Gamestage,’ which seeks to take theater off the stage and video games from behind a screen. The shows that are performed within Project Gamestage contain not only multi-track plots, but also a heavy element of puzzle solving and investigation. The audience members become the ‘gamers’ in a world in which they suddenly found themselves. But unlike digital games, they do not interact through a set of predefined options; reactions to this world are only as limited as one's imagination.
The funding for the performance will contribute towards the renting of the performance space, a beautiful Victorian brownstone in Boston's historic Beacon Hill; the creation of the lavish props and shocking special effects to be used in the course of the show; and to supply the light refreshments which will be served.
The performances are scheduled for March 9 & 10 at 7:30 p.m. and a 2:30 matinee on the 10th.
