A crowd-painting project to bring vibrancy to the pedestrian bridge in Oregon District/South Park, Dayton OH
Being led by a group of young people, Unifying the Divide is an initiative to paint a mural on the floor of the pedestrian bridge that spans US 35 in Dayton, Ohio and connects two historic neighborhoods, South Park and the Oregon District.
In February, we held a competition for local artists to submit designs to be painted onto the bridge. We then asked the public to vote online and select the best design, and the Dayton Wags' submission was choosen. Now, on May 5, 2012 the winning design will be painted in a fun crowd-painting community event, where anyone will be given the opportunity to get their hands dirty with paint!
However, for a successful Painting Day, we need funds to purchase paint supplies. We are hoping that with your help, we can raise $1200 and make the bridge vibrant again!
We envision that by painting the bridge, the permanent public artwork will add vibrancy to the surrounding area, and increase use of the bridge for bicycling and walking.
You can help us with this creativity and community building project in several ways:
- 1) You can pledge towards our goal,
- 2) Volunteer on the paint prep/clean-up day on Saturday April 28th, and
- 3) Join us on the Community Painting Day on Saturday May 5th.
For more information and to volunteer, email email@example.com.
Funds raised above our goal of $1200 will be used to make safety improvements to the bridge, such as adding mirrors to see around blind spots.
We received a dozen artist designs and left it up to the public to vote online and choose their favorite. The top design choosen was submitted by the Dayton Wags. They say that the inspiration for this design comes from the historic gardens in South Park, the arts in the Oregon District, and the stained glass windows that grace the architecture of both neighborhoods. The design as a whole highlights a git that each neighborhood brings to the city. With local flowers symbolizing South Parks’ gardens and Dayton’s work toward a greener future, and the medium of stained glass representing both the Oregon District’s arts and Dayton’s past, present, and future creativity.
