About this project
"Who cares ... it's just lunch": If this is you, not so fast. The National School Lunch Program feeds more than 31 million children every day. And a full 1/3 to 2/3 of the calories those students consume come from school lunch. For many students (many = millions), school lunch is the ONLY complete meal they receive in a day and those numbers are increasing. Free and reduced school lunch participation rose 16% in 2009 and the U.S. Dept of Agriculture announced that more than one in seven American households struggled to put enough food on the table in 2008
So -- without even mentioning health costs and problems related to the obesity epidemic -- we can say with certainty that school lunch directly affects children in every school district in America ... including yours.
If you care what children eat, you should care about school lunch
If you care about the quality of schools, you should care about school lunch
If you care about the society we're creating, you should care about school lunch
If you care about any of the above, support our film!
We're now in the home stretch and we need your help!
The film's first screening will be in Detroit in mid-May, with additional screenings either already planned or in the works for DC, Chicago, NYC, Austin TX, Portland, Atlanta and more.
Aside from helping us keep the lights on as we complete Lunch Line, we have some key "finishing" work that needs to be done (chiefly: color correction, audio sweetening).
More importantly, we want to be able to show the film in as many venues as possible. We've already gotten screening requests from around the country and, for better or worse, meeting those requests takes money.
When you become a backer of Lunch Line you are not only helping us clarify a vital public issue, but (depending on how much you pledge) you are also securing at least one of the sweet rewards listed in our sidebar ------------------->
In the film, six kids from one of the toughest neighborhoods in Chicago set out to fix school lunch and end up at the White House.
Their unlikely journey parallels the dramatic transformation of school lunch from a weak patchwork of local anti-hunger efforts to a robust national feeding program. The film tracks key moments in school food and child nutrition from 1940s, 1960s, and 1980s to the present – revealing political twists, surprising alliances, and more common ground than people realize.
Along the way, Senators, Secretaries of Agriculture, entrepreneurs, and activists from across the political spectrum add top-down perspective to a bottom-up film about the American political process, the health and welfare of its future, and the realities of feeding more than 31 million children a day.
Lunch Line reveals the history and complexity of these issues and in the process shows the common ground upon which interests on all sides can build.
