You love the idea, but you want something special. I mean, REALLY special. You want your non-porous item cast in chocolate. As long as it is no larger than ~8 inches cubed, I'll figure out a way to make a mold of it. It will be necessary to send me the item for me to make the mold. You even get to KEEP THE MOLD!

Note to candy dice people, do not hold on to them "for a special occasion" unless you put them into the fridge. My dice melted when I had a 90 degree day. I wasn't even thinking about it. lol
Hi!
my dice arrived today, all the way down here in Australia.
the chocolate ones were fine, and look tasty, I'm saving them for my game group on Saturday :)
the sugar dice however did not ship well. They all sort of melted/smudged in a roundish blob.
The packaging was great and this is by no means a complaint :) just a note that the chocolate dice travel far better.
thanks! I'll be watching for these when I travel to the US again
@David Rosen, but if he doesn't keep making the candy dice, he's never going to be able to perfect his recipe or methods.
Who’s awesome ? You're awesome Mario!. Thanks for all the effort. Now because I want you to succeed long term, here’s some constructive criticism.
1. The chocolate dice were very good. They looked good and they tasted great. Maybe a little tweaking is needed to reduce the mold lines but that’s rather trivial.
2. The candy dice however needs some work. They melt really easy. I rec. the chocolate and the candy and the chocolate were fine but the candy dice weren’t really dice anymore. Also, the texture of the candy is too chewy with no real distinct taste. My subjective opinion is to just stick to the chocolate unless you can get a better candy recipe.
Best of luck man!
Side note: dont go shipping replcament dice to people. You are already in the red. We all "rolled the dice" to get your dice and thats what life is about. Its the giving thats important not the receiving and you have already given enough. We take some risk just like you Mario.
Dont ship replacement dice!
Strangeness seems to be the name of the game right now. Shoot me a direct email through Kickstarter and we'll see about making that disappointment disappear.
I got my sets today -- the sugar ones look melted in places, so the numbers are very unclear and the shapes are a bit wonky, while the chocolate ones are fine, though they do have some flash on several of the dice. Very odd that the sugar ones were less stable than the chocolate ones. I'm a bit disappointed, to tell the truth.
Hi Mario! I'll be telling others about dicecandies.com now that mine have arrived. They were a special gift and I didn't want to spill the beans too early. Have a couple of stores and some people in mind. Thanks so much. Wishing you continued success!
You can also, as stores start carrying it in May/June (and they let me know), they will also be added to Dice Candies' website:
http://dicecandies.com/stores.htm…
Sonja:
No stores within 100 miles of your zip are participating in Free RPG Day:
http://freerpgday.com/stores.htm
Otherwise they would get a sample.
So, the next option is to ask your local store to carry the product, and send them to dicecandies.com for info. Also, with almost all the backer rewards I'm sending right now, I include 1 min-card that you can hand to the owner of that store that speaks for you.
Hi Mario, I was wondering if any shops around my area will be carrying your dice. 70503 If not, please let me know if I can help get the word out to them. Hope you have a great weekend. Happy Easter!
John, you chose April. :)
I don't even remember setting a month in the survey. Is there any way to check what I entered?
i picked april in the survey and i was wandering what time in april those would be shipped so i can know when to start looking out for mine
Marcus,
Your local game shop will be carrying the products hopefully, and you will be able to buy from them. :)
hey cant wait to get my set i didnt have enough to get the other sets that i want i would love to get one more chocolate set and a sugar set but the site looks like its only going to sell in bulk
Brad: I won't be, but there are some retailers who work conventions that have expressed interest in purchasing product to sell at their tables. Nothing solid yet though.
Now I can't wait for mine to arrive down here in Oz.
Quick question will you be selling or promoting these at gaming conventions?
I'm heading to the US for GenCon and wondering if I'll see these on a table.
Tom: That is officially the farthest distance traveled (~7000 miles) for the dice, so glad to hear it! Thanks so much for sharing your story!
WOW!!!! The package arrived here this week and I am completely BLOWN away! Thank you SO much! The packaging worked perfectly... nothing was melted or damaged in the least!
They look (and taste) amazing... they also roll, quite well. 3 of us ate one package of them together one night and made a game out of it. As long as you rolled anything other than a "1" you were allowed to eat the dice... One of my friends kept rolling a "1", and had to give the die to me, LOL! She finally rolled a "16" on the d20 and was allowed to enjoy her own snack!
My friend's birthday is next week, so your timing is fantastic. He is going to drop a litter of kittens when he sees these. He is a HUGE chocolate lover and a complete D&D nerd (god bless him, LOL!)
These dice will make his day, if not his year. Thank you so much Mario! Keep up the good work and best wishes for future projects! :)
Tom in Taiwan
DUDE!!! The Chocolates look AMAZING!!!! Congrats on the beginning of your production!!! :)
Hey! Just saw the post from Free RPG Day! Congrats for making it into the box!
@Heather
He's lived in Chicago, but not Peoria AFAIK. Probably a different guy. :) I'll ask him though.
have always LOVED SXSW. Enjoy it there and make lots of contacts!
Is this Dave Espinosa from Peoria, IL? (I used to work with him ten + years ago when my last name was Paris if it is!) :)
Tom (Birdienumnums): Don't feel bad, that's the exact reason why that option is available. I'll make sure you get yours in March as soon as possible.
Hi Mario!
I am really excited about your project. I'm sorry about the delays and I feel awful that I asked for March delivery, but these are meant to be a birthday present and my geek's...er... friend's birthday is in March.... I am also worried about shipping chocolate any later than March due to the weather... but the gel packs you've mentioned might help. Fingers crossed! Keep up the good work!
Tom
Please use quality chocolate (no Hershey's etc). Barry Callebaut 71% bittersweet block or at least 60% thick bittersweet block (e.g., as listed here: http://www.chocosphere.com/cgi-bin/webstore/web_store.cgi ) is excellent chocolate and quite easy to cook with (wife has made truffles and various other things). We used the 60%.
You should be able to get better prices wholesale. I think we paid $45 for the thick bittersweet 11lb bar, though that was 2 years ago so maybe prices have gone up. I'm looking for the wholesale place we get it from in the bay area and will forward that info when I get it.
You seem pretty clearly eligible for wholesale purchase and all you should need to get that is to show the business license for your company. Certainly the quantity you will be purchasing should be enough to be clearly more than "personal use" !! I'm sorry they are giving you grief in that regard. One option might be to find someone in the area who is getting wholesale prices from them and see if they'll let you piggy back your order on one of theirs.
@Douglas: I will be buying gel packs for shipping to warmer climates, and it's likely that the warmer it is, the sooner I'll be trying to ship it!
I'm okay with the delays... I just hope they ship before the weather gets warm. I'd hate to receive little puddles of chocolate. ;)
Hey Jessica,
Supplying the chocolate has actually been the hardest thing to do... I found a local supplier, but they won't sell direct to me, and everyone I am suppose to buy through won't return my calls (I've been working on it since the start of the project).
So yes, I agree that different chocolate is an option I'll test with so that there is an option for vegans and lactose intolerant folks who don't want the sugar dice, it's an 'after Kickstarter' option. I opted for a quality brand of dark chocolate that people are familiar with for the project.
Thanks for sticking with it, regardless of your personal preference. I do appreciate the support!
I was a little disappointed to read that you're using baking chips that contain milk-fat as your chocolate. I really hope you'll consider switching to a higher quality, dairy-free couverture chocolate for future production runs. I considered cancelling my pledge, but I decided to leave it, because it is a fun project. Sadly, I'll have to gift all of the chocolate, since I can't eat dairy. Using baking chips is fine for an amateur project, but now that you're investing in high-end tempering equipment, a better quality couverture would give you a better end product.
Stephanie,
{nail}{head} meet!
It's gone from one of my side projects to my primary project, an S-Corp for tax purposes, and the potential for even more amazing gaming related items in chocolate and sugar!
It's full of awesome, I assure you.
Something I love about this KS project is that the initial goal was so modest, at under $1000, and now here it is with over $15K in funding. I can imagine Mario started out thinking "oh, this'll be a fun little side thing," and now it's "OMG, how am I going to fill all these orders?" I only hope this turns out to be full of awesome instead of frustration.
Thank you Mario. You are truly thinking about everything through and through. Impressed! Roll2Play will definitely be a loyal retailer for you. It will be interesting to hear your price points later next year as you continue to evolve. My customers are constantly talking about it. Have a very Merry Christmas and a Fantastic New Year!
Tiffany,
I use to live in FL so I understand the brutality of summer. When summer finally comes around there will likely have to be faster shipping with cold packs... I'm likely to do some testing to find out what works... but not until after the Kickstarter rewards are done (I'm buying cold packs for shipping many of those as well).
Mario, I am loving the progress with this project. This is proof that not only you will succeed, but my customers are going to LOVE this product. Question for you: Summers in Texas are brutal. What is shipping going to be like? Will you only ship during cooler months or will you have special shipping? Special shipping could get costly fast. Thanks for your thoughts on Shipping.
Sincerely,
Tiffany
When you do go commercial with it, I would also recommend offering sets of pipped 6-sided dice and 10-sided dice, catering to the d6 and d10 gaming crowds...
I'm going to work on chocolate dice first and foremost, but Valentine's day (especially considering shipping time) is a little tight.
Brilliant. I only wish they were available for Valentine's Day. My boyfriend just got me into tabletop RPGs and we now share a love of funny sided dice.
For games of a certain age, the canonical colors of polyhedral dice are here:
http://bit.ly/urOzbb
These were the original D&D dice, sold directly by TSR and also included in the "Basic D&D" box set. Crappy dice, but oh! the memories.
I've forwarded this project to Wil Wheaton. Hopefully he will be willing to mention it to his followers.
i like the idea of the character markers, for the enemy of course... once it is dead, you get to consume it!!!
With as well as your project is doing, it would seem that you're well on your way toward being the Willy Wonka of gamerdom!
Gummy Dice is a cool idea.
How about the possibility of a variety of flavors in the sugar dice?
Hit point tokens, candy coins, character markers...
Mark: The oversized dice dimensions are 1" cubed for the d6, and the d20 is 1.25" (if you were to draw an imaginary box around it). That should give you some idea.
Awesome idea and I eagerly await my sets of dice. I do have a question though, what are the dimensions of the oversized chocolate dice?
GOOD LUCK! I have been looking for chocolate gaming dice forevvver as a special gift. So happy to help your project. Yea, and get a couple of the first sets out. Very excited! Thanks for doing what you love to do.
Heidi: I'm working with a distributor (and creator of Free RPG Day) to handle a lot of distribution, but I'll also be selling sets directly to shops wholesale. More info will be up on the website (once it is built).
Eric & Kristin: Thanks!
How exciting! I own a gaming shop (Gaming Underground) in High Point, NC, and I think I might have some folks interested in this sort of thing. I'm looking forward to information on corporate purchasing. (And, obviously, to my own set of dice.)
Congrats on an incredible campaign!! I'm so excited to find this and to be able to support. I'm actually giving the donation to the campaign as a holiday gift this year!!
I know all our gaming friends will be super jealous and are definitely going to want some and we'll be taking them by the local gaming shops as well!
Simple, creative, fun. Brilliant. A great idea, and it looks like you're going to execute on it well. Bravo. Proud to lend support!
Jess: Not until March will they be delivered. Funding isn't delivered until the project closes, and that is what allows me to buy the supplies necessary to fulfill the rewards and make these available in game stores worldwide.
