Update #5: Connections

Update #5 · Sep 28, 2012 · comment

Hello dear backers!

As we enter the final week of my Kickstarter funding, my expectations for this process have all been surpassed.  I'm especially struck by the power of our ability to connect with each other in so many ways.  Kickstarter gives me some fascinating statistics - for example, showing that my project video has been played over 14,000 times!

Almost 350 of you have decided to support my efforts so far -  there are the family who have followed and encouraged my work for many years now... friends who cheer me on and believe in what I am striving for... colleagues who see the potential and are helping it to become reality... fans of dinosaurs... fans of paleoart... fans of science and technology... and somehow you have all found my project!

Of course, I have had a lot of help spreading the word.  I have the creative, talented, hard working team at Kickstarter to thank for tremendous exposure throughout the project; my work seemed to catch their attention from early on, and this week I was featured on their blog:

http://www.kickstarter.com/blog/featured-creator-tyler-keillor-on-the-digital-dino

I was proud to be included in artist and friend Kalliopi Monoyios' Scientific American blog "Symbiartic"

http://blogs.scientificamerican.com/symbiartic/2012/09/17/sciart-of-the-day-3d-dryptosaurus/

And also flattered to have Wired contact me for a quick blog interview

http://www.wired.com/design/2012/09/3d-kickstarter-dinosaur/

Not to mention a great post by science writer Brian Switek on the Smithsonian blog

http://blogs.smithsonianmag.com/dinosaur/2012/09/dryptosaurus-needs-a-hand/

I've had steadfast support from the team at Jersey Boys Hunt Dinosaurs, (Gary Vecchiarelli, Christopher DiPiazza, Terry Alan Davis Jr., Andrea Bilardi), who have gone so far as to link their domain to my Kickstarter page, as well as promoting my project in posts such as this dino-watercolor tutorial:

http://jerseyboyhuntsdinosaurs.blogspot.com/2012/09/painting-dryptosaurus-tutorial.html

And in so many other ways, we've connected by email, facebook, twitter, and in person.

But maybe the most significant connection is the way my work will be able to connect with kids, thanks to your generosity.  Some of my favorite compliments have come from overhearing comments made by children looking at my sculptures, or even just seeing the expressions on their faces as they stare eye-to-eye with a dinosaur...your backing now allows me to think bigger, create better, and share the wonder and appreciation I have for the natural world with the next generation.

Thank you!    -Tyler

Thank you!! You will receive a cast of my dinosaur sculpture, Herrerasaurus. This reward really exemplifies the power of using digital technologies: I started with a life-sized, traditionally sculpted head. Next, the head was surface scanned to digitize it. That digital scan was then scaled down, and 3D printed using a prototyping machine. The resulting miniature version of the dinosaur head, perfect in detail and proportion, was molded and cast to create your reward!

Thank you!! I've brought back this sold-out reward due to popular demand. The resulting miniature version (2.5 inches) of the dinosaur head, perfect in detail and proportion, was molded and cast to create your reward!

Thank you!!! This reward will be a very special, one-of-a-kind casting of my traditionally sculpted Dryptosaurus head. This life-sized model, about 3 feet long, will be an ALBINO variation - pink eyes, white scales and protofeathers, pale keratin...I've been wanting to create one of these for a while now, and I think it will be quite terrifying! A very unique piece for a serious collector, and still lower than museum pricing. Extra charge for International shipping.
