Happy Monday Everybody.
Mastering is underway and I think I'll have a few updates this week, too! This first update is about the song titles, like chapter titles out of a book or scene overviews from the movie (that doesn't exist but totally should). I'm adding some of my notes to get you excited/scared, so here we go:
1 - The Departure - Totally cliche and serious beginning to the album, the slow, stringy background music from the kickstarter video. Christopher Mackenzie leaves for Earth (as seen on the website, duh).
2 - Turbothrusted - The upbeat one at the end of the Kickstarter video, the one you guys (you know who you are) said sounds like daft punk and terminator.
3 - Dreamons - The ship is cold, but not without some comforting, relaxing tones, which is nice because it's gonna be a long trip.
4 - Homesick - Wow, didn't' realize I had 3 one-word song titles in a row. Too late to change that now so I stand by it, firmly. This is the first of three signs that there is some sort of internal struggle for Christopher Mackenzie. Not a big deal though because there are no drums and pretty strings show up by the end....
5 - Operation: Optimism - Space travel is for the strong, and Chris Mack would see a glass half full if he had a glass, and if he was real. Guitar shows up for the first (or second? eh?) time on the album. Echoes become more prominent, obviously. Or is that in his head?
6 - Asteroid Dodger at Dawn - Things could be worse, but this isn't exactly an uplifting track. That's probably just because it is in 6/8, maybe. We're introduced to some new sounds here, and drums begin to rear their ugly/awesome heads.
7 - Signal Loss - There's a reason that the pilgrims from Earth haven't heard from their old planet in 300 years, but Christopher Mackenzie just discovered why. And, duh, it's lonely when you don't have anyone to talk to but the ship (didn't you guys see MOON?)
8 - Visitor - I'm going to leave you guessing on this one, a little bit, but it is slowly becoming my favorite. It's not like the scene from The Abyss, I swear (we're in space, not underwater...or are we?).
9 - Oort Approaches - A space march, in deep deep...an whatever. It takes a while to get there, and takes a while to leave, too, just like everything else floating in the universe. This song was written in 2006, people, but was deemed too depressing to record. So I changed the key and it gives me hope, so I can only imagine what it does/did for Christopher Mackenzie.
10 - Second Solar Wind - With less than a light year to travel things are looking up. If you're not humming this one after listening to it, listen to it again. Or learn to hum, whatever. It gets messy by the end.
11 - Drifter - You know that feeling when you're getting close to your destination but you still have an important, and not insignificant distance to go? That. 6.5 minutes of uncertainty. A gentler, spacier, condensed variation on The Disintegration Loops, a huge influence on the album ambience.
12 - ????
Just wait, you'll find out how it ends when you hear it, which will be soon. Sorry to do this, but you had to see it coming.
So that's it. 12 tracks, 45 minutes. If you start the album at the first lion's roar of Bill & Ted's Bogus Journey you'll get to hear it twice and remember how unattractive 1991 was.
I love you?
Almost there, thanks for your patience!
The files are out the door for mastering then album production! It won't be long now.
I have a page up for TRVOCM where you can get a glimpse of the album cover (a modified version of which you'll see as a poster) and more importantly: BACKER THANK YOUS! I'm super happy to list all the wonderful people who helped make this possible.
So go check it out, and sit tight, more news from me next week (and possibly the digital version of the album!): http://music.tylerfinck.com
