Mumford & Sons is in town this weekend for the Gentleman of the Road Stopover tour, which includes something really special: an event that the band is calling A Salute to Steinbeck. A small, intimate presentation they are giving at an old Monterey Theater where they will play and discuss Steinbeck's influence on their work! This event is being sponsored by non-other than our friends at The National Steinbeck Center.
We've hit the road with the crew to film this remarkable story. Check back here all weekend for updates and pictures of our road trip :)
OK: Mumford & Sons is one of the best bands in the world. They have millions and millions of fans. But what's that have to do with "For Ed Ricketts"? Good question. The theme of "For Ed Ricketts" is inspiration. The importance of following your bliss. Mentorship. We, as filmmakers, have been influenced by the work of John Steinbeck and Joseph Campbell. Both of whom were very influenced by Ed Ricketts. Having now learned about Ricketts ourselves, we too are very influenced by his work and his story. So, when a band like Mumford & Sons (which is extremely influential, especially to younger generations) makes to trip to Monterey to share with people about how they've been influenced by Steinbeck, we feel it's a great story thread in our documentary.
Sounds great! But aren't there other famous, influential people who were inspired by Ricketts and Steinbeck that you can talk to? Yes, there are! Quite a few actually. And we are already working on when to interview a few of them. What makes Mumford & Sons important is their connection to audiences of all ages. But also, their strong desire to talk about the influences in their lives. They read books. It inspired their great music. They are sharing that with others (on a grand scale) That is exactly what we are talking about. If more young people read because of this film... we couldn't ask for anything more.
