What We’re Doing
When we began A Crooked Line four years ago, we could not anticipate the journey on which it would take us. Now, looking back at our relationship to the film and its subjects, we are excited to share their story and ours with the world. Currently, we are in the final stages of completing the film. Funds raised in this campaign will go towards the film’s post-production and distribution. The distribution process for independent films is a time-intensive and costly endeavor.
The Story
A Crooked Line is a fearless portrait of pain and compassion, the story of one family's harrowing battle with drug addiction and the man who reached out to help them in their time of need.
After seven years of struggle and countless failed attempts at rehabilitation, the Chapman family finds themselves at a loss to help their son, Riley, whose crippling drug addiction is tearing their family apart. Witnessing his friends' struggle, family friend Cheo Martinez arranges for Riley to travel to the rain forests of Peru on an extraordinary journey towards recovery and redemption.
During his time amongst the indigenous Shipibo community, Riley begins the long healing process and is finally forced to confront the demons within. Through this experience, Riley is given the opportunity to interrupt his cycle of self-destruction and learn how to live a productive life. For the first time in many years, the Chapmans are free of the constant worry that comes from their son’s drug use; however, they must now learn to look outside their own destructive patterns to find hope for the future.
Yet, as old pains begin to resurface, the whole endeavor seems on the verge of collapse, and Cheo's commitment to Riley and his family is tested in ways he could never have believed.
This intimate portrayal of the Chapman family’s struggle against all odds for a healthier life, and Cheo’s unfaltering commitment to help his friends, provides a daunting look at the crippling effects of addiction as well as an inspiring account of the incredible power that the hope and compassion of one man can have upon an entire family.

Why We’re Doing It
Through our relationship with the Chapmans and Cheo over the past four years, it became more and more apparent how significant this story was. Theirs was not just a story of addiction, but also of confronting the past and learning to live with previous mistakes. Riley’s addiction affected all those surrounding him, even us, the filmmakers. We became invested in his story and we know that other people will too.
We have tremendous respect and gratitude for the Chapman family for their openness and cooperation to share such an intimate and painful experience in their lives. Their hope, as well as ours, is that this film will help other families dealing with similarly horrific situations.
