Up to 60 paintings from a singular muse; the beautiful Colorado River in Southern Utah.
“The wind will not stop. Gusts of sand swirl before me, stinging my face. But there is still too much to see and marvel at, the world very much alive in the bright light and wind, exultant with the fever of spring, the delight of morning.” - Edward Abbey, Desert Solitaire
Hello, I’m Todd Orchard. I’m a studio artist and I also paint en plein air, which is a fancy way of saying that I paint outside. Last year, I painted a series of scenes from the Colorado River during the second annual “Plein Air Moab” competition, I worked steadily for three sun-baked days, and the resulting series was promising, but I wished I had extra time to develop my work and make the paintings more visually rich. As summer approaches, I’m eager to start a new series on the Colorado… Please help get me back to the river so I can create my next series of desert landscapes!
There are many costs that factor into the creative process and this project in particular: The tools and supplies needed to create art, like oil paint, brushes, and frames; Campsite fees and fuel; Giclée reproductions and postage, plus other promotional materials. Your support can help offset these costs… and help me accomplish my goal of painting up to sixty paintings from a series of sojourns into the deserts of southern Utah.
Utah’s deserts are among the most beautiful wild spaces in the world: immense, weather-worn rock formations and stunning fluctuations of light and shadow; the warm, clay-rich sand; the cool rumble of the Colorado River as it rushes under the verdant foliage along its riverbed. It’s impossible not to feel a profound sense of awe when faced with the intense beauty of the river rushing through the desert. Simply put, the Colorado beckons.
The Plan: I would like to do as many 5x7” paintings on site as possible to give my supporters the widest selection from which to choose. I’ll also be creating a series of watercolors - some on site, some back in the studio. I’ll shoot photographs to bring back to studio, so that I can devote deeper attention to creating larger works as well, like my 9x12” and 10x15” paintings.
The Show: The resulting series will be displayed in a gallery - tentatively Terra Nova Gallery in Provo - for two weeks. I’ll also post pictures of the paintings and gallery opening updates on my blog. All of my supporters will receive show announcements well in advance of the show. I hope you can all join me at the opening!
Delivery of the Goods: At the end of the show, all of the paintings will be taken down, boxed, and sent to my supporters. The larger paintings might take a little longer to arrive, because I’ll have to find packaging in acceptable sizing and strength. I’ll mail out Giclées on paper in tubes, and the watercolors will be arrive safely in sturdy, waterproof envelopes.
Thank you so much for your consideration and support!
