Three sentence backer update

Update #13 · Jul 10, 2012 · 5 comments

Dear backers,

We just got tracking numbers for 2 enormous cases of maps en-route to San Francisco from Tokyo. That means this map is about to go from a thing we've been imagining & obsessing over to a real physical hold-it-in-your-hand thing.

Maps printed this afternoon in Tokyo!

Update #12 · Jul 3, 2012 · 2 comments

Dear Backers,

Two days ago we got word from the printers in Tokyo that they'd begin our run this afternoon. We rushed to find someone in Tokyo who could document the process, and in the end an intern-of-a-friend-of-a-friend* volunteered.

She couldn't remember the address of the factory, but she took a picture of a sign in front, which was enough that a bit of google-fu revealed this building as the birthplace of our maps:

Here's the boss of the print-shop, Mr. Kohiyama:

Inside the print shop are several Ryobi 750 offset machines, a venerable sort of heavy duty offset press that are used all over the world for high quality printing.

And here's a picture of a map proof:

The current shipping date we have from the folding company is July 11th, but we're trying to see if they can rush the run and have it done by July 6th instead, in order to avoid having to wait another weekend.

We've given out quite a few prototype maps to backers who are arriving before the final thing is ready, so if you will be getting to SF before July 13th please get in touch by Kickstarter message. We're sorry that this is taking longer than expected, but we'll make sure anyone who gets here early will get a map, even if it isn't the final Tyvek version.

Because of a combination of low tech things (like international money transfers that we have to fax in, one sheet at a time) and fairly high-tech things (like google street view) we can all watch the process of the map becoming real in stop-motion. It's a bit frustrating in its asynchronicity, and it's made this project late, but it's also pretty awesome.

We've got mailing labels ready to roll, so as soon as we have the maps, they'll be zipping around the country (and world!) into your hands.

Best,

-Eric & Shan

*Interestingly, the company she was interning for is called Gengo, a realtime translation tool that we actually used quite a bit early on to communicate with the printers in Japan. Small world.

They're coming!

Update #11 · Jun 22, 2012 · comment

Dear Backers,

Sorry for the spot of silence--we're writing now with good news:

After a great deal of cross-cultural confusion, email mishaps, format issues, currency trading snafus and multi-gigabyte files flying back and forth between SF, Singapore, Reykjavik and Tokyo...

We're finally in production!

Thanks to a very timely introduction made by one of our backers (thanks Craig!) we found a printer in Tokyo who was able to take on the challenge of doing a high-detail print onto Tyvek. There was some confusion about what we needed which resulted in an initial quote that was for nearly the entire amount this Kickstarter received, but when that was cleared up we got a very competitive quote from them.

With that quote in hand, we sent out wire transfers to our Tyvek supplier in Tokyo, the printer, and the Miura-Lab folks (who's top-secret machine is folding the maps). The current estimate is that we'll have the maps around the 30th, but we're going to see if we can expedite that at all.

If you are going to be traveling to SF before that date, please let us know and we'll work something out. We've given a few prototypes out to some backers who got here early, and we'll do whatever it takes to make sure you have a map when you show up to explore!

Best,

-Eric & Shan

PS: We had a friend in Tokyo lined up to go to the printer's and the Miura-Lab to take some pictures documenting the production run, but he's out sick and may or may not be better by next week. If you're in Tokyo and handy with a camera, please get in touch: hi@wheatpond.com
