Strange logos in the sky, that turn into constellations...
A pretty unbelievable text emerges from nowhere...
The view rolls back between stars, planets, and strange UFOs with a recurring hexagonal pattern...
And finally you find yourself in a spaceship with weird jelly aliens, who are moving so hecticly they seem to have a seizure.
Hello everyone*! Hello backers!
I wanted to introduce this update with the intro of the game. This doesn't necessarily mean the game is finished, but we're getting to it! As you can see from the above intro and from this video:
... graphics look quite ok now. I've finalized the look of the game, and created the in-game interface.
To be honest, at this point a few people have been involved in the process apart from me, though in a smaller measure. Workload is A LOT, so I'm trying to hire/ask for help whenever I find somebody who's up to the task (only the best!!). Let me talk about them a little.
Giovanni Vadalà is the man behind all the UFHO characters, he modeled and animated them all (there's 10 different species up to now, with 5 more to come from the backers of THE CREATIVE MIND tier). Giovanni worked super fast, I was almost not able to keep up with the pace and implement the characters as he was dishing them out.
So for the curious technicians among you, he used Blender to model them, then passed the models to me to skin them in 3DS Max (it's the only 3D software I know how to use), then I passed them to him to animate, and then he gave them back to me to texture and integrate in Unity. Nice workflow, eh?
Francesco D'Andrea, obviously, did the soundtrack and the sound effects. He dug up in his production cave in Lille for the whole of August, and emerged one month later with this wonderful work: http://francescodandrea.bandcamp.com/album/ufho2-original-soundtrack and a bunch of sound effects, and voices.
By the way, Francesco has been featured on the Bandcamp homepage today in the Staff Picks with his album Quick Party before the End of the World. Not as good as the UFHO2 one, but not too bad either... :)
For the ones of you who donated for THE AUDIOPHILE tier, I'm going to send you the soundtrack in digital format later today.
Finally, Erica Tortora - a girl I found here in the office doing nothing, immediately hired - worked on the game interface, both during the match and in the menus. She produced a wealth of icons, labels, buttons, emoticons (for the chat balloons), etc. and now the game looks better (and more complete) than ever before.
So where are we now? I can tell you I still need a month and more to finish the game. The AI is done, and it's brilliant (it even beats me sometimes), but I still need to work on the network play and the story mode.
Much stuff has been completed but still a lot needs to be done, and I'm crunching day and night to finish as soon as possible. I hope you will still have a bit of patience, game making is kinda long and hard! :D
When you finally get to try the game, I'm sure you won't be disappointed!
Rewards will come soon, one by one. As I said before, physical rewards are tied to the completion of the game. I can't send the posters or the t-shirts, since for many of you the package includes also the physical copy of the game. For this reason, I'm going to pack everything together at the same time.
Later on I'm going to mail you the soundtrack, and then next week I'll start sending postcards. If you have changed your home address, make sure to let me know.
I'll also update the iOS build for the backers, and create soon a PC/Mac/Linux beta build for all you desktop pledgers of THE FASHIONIST tier, and above. Get ready.
Also, come on the forums because soon I'll need to talk with people from THE CREATIVE MIND tier about new characters, and backers from THE COLLECTOR tier about including their name in a level somehow. I think it would be nice (especially for the characters) if the discussion is readable for other backers (not anyone, just backers).
So yeah, register for the forums and if you're a backer of any tier, message me here and I'll enable you for the backers-only section.
