A hot beverage produces heat and slight moisture that's damaging to your furniture. The Floating Mug; it's novelty you can live with.

Inspiration
In December of 2008, I had just relocated to North Carolina from New York when I came up with the idea of a "floating mug". My wife and I had just recently married and we purchased our first home along with all new furniture. As you can imagine, transitioning from a small NY apartment shared between 3 brothers, meant my wife had a lot of training to do. I would get yelled at all the time for some of my more notable work (see next image).

So I'm a huge tea drinker, and I have come across numerous designs for cups that have some kind of built in coaster, however, the design's fell short of what I was looking for. For one thing, I love the feel of warm porcelain as I'm sipping a hot cup of tea or coffee, so the mug needed to be made of porcelain while maintaining the unique design. It also needed to be functional while pleasing to the eye. With this is mind, the very next time I went to reach for a banana off the banana holder, the concept hit me like stain on wood. That's when the floating mug concept was born.

The Project
After a great deal of research, I managed to find and work with a manufacturer in China to create the original prototype mugs for me, which I've been using for the past few years. Once I had the mugs in hand, I was content with having them for personal use. Overtime, I've had a good amount of individuals ask me where I bought my mug, and for the longest time I've always told them that it's a one of kind.
I was fortunate, enough to discover Kickstarter recently and have realized the opportunity for me to see if this is a mug people really like. I knew, however, that sourcing this mug from China would be much cheaper, but I know what it's like to be unemployed for extended periods of time, so I thought I'd play my part and explore the possibilities of making the mugs in the U.S. The mug is currently a prototype and unlike a typical mug, there are extra steps needed to actually produce a finished mug. I've found a manufacturer in the U.S that's going to produce these mugs for me.
The money pledged will be used to manufacture a master mold of both the mug and and the handle. The factory will also need to produce the production molds for the mug and handle as well. If the project is really popular, I may consider offering color options if the manufacturing process easily allows for it. It's my understanding that during the glazing process, maintaining the mug in a hanging position in extreme temperatures complicates the traditional process of making a porcelain mug. For this project to be successful, I will need a minimum order of 500 units. My goal is to have these shipped right before Christmas.

A vessel that holds cold beverages will produce very significant amounts of moisture/sweat/condensation; enough so that if it collected at the bottom of the mug that would be a valid concern. This is a tea/coffee mug, and hot beverages don't cause a significant amount of moisture/condensation. The only moisture this mug addresses is the slight spill that may occur when you take a sip. Most cases it will evaporate before it even reaches the bottom. If you were to spill so much that a significant amount can collect under the mug, then you would have a mess with or without the flaoting mug. I hope I answered your question.
