The Tia Imani Hanna Project is composed of three members, Carolyn Koebel, percussionist; Elden Kelly, singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist; and Tia Imani Hanna, violinist, vocalist and composer. We have a shared interest in improvisation and in creating music that lives in the moment, in shaping a sacred space with music, and in sharing those evolving moments with an audience.

Where did this sound come from?

As we were rehearsing for some performances, we discovered that we had many common musical interests, which we found were defined in the spaces between the songs. This creative space became the music itself—a place where we really connected.  

We have a lot of textural sounds among us, with Carolyn playing on several kinds of percussion instruments including calimba, cajon, cymbals, sheep toes and even a bedpan; Elden playing on the Turkish cunbush, pronounced (june boosh), which is a Turkish banjo, the Chinese pipa, the glissantar (a fretless guitar with six strings), and he sings too; and Tia on violin and vocals, sometimes simultaneously and in harmony with herself.

We think that we have a very unique and vibrant sound and would like to record this music. This is where you come in.

The Spaces Between Us

We are asking for $6,000. This Kickstarter campaign will help us to complete this CD project.

The funds will go toward paying for recording and mixing tracks, mastering the CD, graphic design and pressing of the CDs, as well as paying our wonderful videographer. We can’t do this without your help. This is an all-or-nothing project. If we meet our goal or go over our target amount, we get all of the proceeds. If we don’t meet our goal, we get nothing. So every little bit helps. We will be happy to accept contributions as low as $1, but we really hope you’ll be able to do more. If 100 fans or friends donate $5, then we are 10% of the way there.
