But like true ballplayers, we are going to keep slugging away.

You have probably already been notified by kickstarter that we came up short this time around. Fear not, loyal and steadfast Backers, Throw Like A Girl will be completed! We just need a little time to go back over the budget and see how we can do more with less, and then we will re-launch this project on kickstarter. It is our sincere hope that you will stand by us and will reaffirm your pledge soon.

Because we did not reach our goal, you will not be charged for your initial pledges, in fact I believe that any and all holds on your funds have already been released.

I am so appreciative and humbled by your support. So many of you did far more than offer a pledge, I know you re-posted the notice to your and your organization’s Facebook pages, you've blogged about the film, linked from your own websites to our kickstarter page, emailed and called your friends and family asking them to pledge, wrote up a notices and placed it in your newsletters, notified your women's and girl's baseball databases, increased your own pledges in an effort to stimulate others and to do all you could do to help, and offered me your suggestions on additional fundraising ideas.

I think, 86 Backers pledging nearly $9000 is very impressive and I thank you all so much! We had pledges coming in until the very last minute, so it is my feeling that we just ran out of time. We had so much momentum coming into the last few days, I think if we had a few more days we would have made it. Kickstarter does offer a 90-day funding cycle, so I’ll be looking into all of our options over the weekend and will be back in touch soon.

      Derk,

      Some of the Dutch gals who play on the team you speak of will be playing with my women's team in Hong Kong in January for the 2011 Hong Kong Phoenix Cup International Women's Baseball Tournament. I am so looking forward to this and meeting the Dutch gals and having a great time.

      Your words are so correct. It seems to me that, in researching the history of women's baseball, the act of keeping women and girls out of that game, which happened here in the USA in the early 1900s (well, actually, it happened before that but REALLY started happening in the early 1930s), had a ripple effect around the world. Other countries adopted the same attitude toward girls and women playing, unfortunately.

      Things are beginning to change, however. Even though we still have many steep hills to climb, we are in the midst of climbing, and we'll reach the top soon. During the 2010 Women's World Cup in Venezuela this past August, the Venezolanos completely embraced women's baseball (especially their national team), despite women still not having equality in society. They have a lot of pride for their national team, and that's terrific to see.

      There's a unique situation that is happening right now in Vietnam. Baseball is very new to Vietnam, but there are a couple of baseball organizations there currently, in Hanoi. One of them is focusing mainly on youth, but the other is an organization for adults and that is made up of university students who are playing baseball. There are a handful of women playing. I've been talking with people from each organization, and they are completely supportive of getting girls and women into the game. It's a unique situation, because it's one of the few.... if not only.... place in the world where efforts to develop baseball for girls and women is happening WITHOUT the existence of softball!!! There is no softball in Vietnam currently. So, I think this would be a great place to see what can happen when softball isn't the thorn in the side of so many females who want to play baseball. There still is mindset of traditional values that strongly question girls and women playing, but there's no softball to push them into.

      Hi Cami!
      I believe it is important to make your documentary and I'm glad you won't give up the project. The longer you think of it, the stranger it becomes that women aren't allowed to play baseball! In my own country (The Netherlands) girls of age 12+ are pushed in the direction of softball (a very nice sport in itself however), because they allegedly have "no future in baseball". The Royal Dutch Baseball Association reluctantly admitted one women's team in one of the (men's) leagues and they are doing fine. Another women's team (of the Amsterdam Pirates) will start in 2011 in one of the leagues. Nice milestones, but still only the beginning of the next frontier of women's emancipation: baseball.
      So I would say: keep up good spirits and continue with your important work!
