A Grindhouse style super-hero movie about crime-fighting cheerleaders.
What is Spirit Squad?
Spirit Squad: Crime-Fighting Cheerleaders is a super-hero movie about crime-fighting cheerleaders.
When five high school cheerleaders discover that they have gained super-powers, they commit to give back to the community by using their new found abilities by becoming crime-fighting super-hero cheerleaders.
The Spirit Squad girls take down one drug dealer after another until they finally come up against the ruthless drug kingpin of the city himself - Big Daddy Cash.
Matters are made worse for the Spirit Squad girls when Big Daddy Cash creates his own team of criminal cheerleaders, The Vicious Vixens, and orders them to bring down the Spirit Squad once and for all at the big homecoming football game by planting a bomb under the bleachers. Will the Spirit Squad defeat the Vicious Vixens and save the city from certain death???
*Yes, there were only four Spirit Squad girls in the trailer. The movie will have five!
What makes this movie special?
Several things, actually.
1. Super-hero movie with women: Super-hero movies are the biggest money makers in Hollywood and they continue to produce Batman movies, Super-Man movies, Spider-Man movies, Iron-Man, X-Men, Hulk, Avengers and many more, with talks of Dr. Strange and Black Panther just around the corner. BUT STILL NO WONDER WOMAN MOVIE! Well, our movie will have 5 Wonder Women in it!
2. It's a Girl Power! movie: The Spirit Squad heroes are strong and intelligent women that make their own decisions, take care of the business of ridding the city from crime, and don't depend on men to solve their problems for them. This is a girl power movie! Think Buffy the Vampire Slayer meets Quentin Tarantino's Death Proof. (* the last 20 minutes of Death Proof, that is. Where Zoe Bell is on the hood of the car and the girls are all kicking Kurt Russell's ass. You get the picture!)
3. It's a Crime-Fighting Cheerleaders movie: How many great crime-fighting cheerleaders movies can you name? None! This movie will be the first serious action movie done in this genre. And you will have bragging rights for the rest of your life that you helped fund it as well as the exclusive rewards to prove it to anyone at parties that doesn't believe you could have been a contributor to such an amazingly kickass movie.
4. They fight an army of Zombies in the sequel: Ya, it's a trilogy. And the next two movies are incredibly cool too, but first things first. Let's get this movie made!
Who are the people making Spirit Squad?
There are too many people involved in this movie to name on this Kickstarter page, so we'll feature a few of the key players that have been involved from the beginning and played a major role in making this project a reality.
Thom Rockwell is the Writer and Director of the movie. Rockwell is an accomplished Director in the world of Independent Filmmaking, a highly creative person and a lifelong martial artist. Spirit Squad is the movie that he has always wanted to be his first feature length motion picture, so he has been planning this project for years. Previous films by Rockwell can be seen on his website at www.rockwelldigital.com.
Ben Sant is the Director of Photography. Ben is a full time professional photographer and cinematographer who has several web-series, shorts and feature films to his credit. Ben is extremely knowledgeable about cameras, lens and lighting and is just as excited about doing a Grindhouse flick as Rockwell is. Samples of Ben's still photography and cinematography can be seen on his website at www.btsphotography.com.
Randin Graves is the Composer of the amazing Grindhouse score for the Spirit Squad trailer and is very anxious to take it to the next level for the feature film. Randin is probably one of the most brilliant and talented composers in Independent Cinema and it seems there is nothing he can't do. He has won far too many awards to list here and currently has 49 film scores to his credit. Check out sample's of Randin's other scores and follow his ongoing work on his website at www.randingraves.com.
David Evanoff is the Sound-Designer. David has been engineering and producing for almost 20 years. David has worked on numerous movies as a sound editor, foley engineer, ADR engineer and mixer. David is looking forward to providing the soundscape for the movie, not the least of which will include wonderful explosions, tons of machine guns and a few more brutal bone breaks. You can learn more about David's work on his website at www.davidevanoff.com.
Shay Williamson plays the leader of the Spirit Squad, Monica Flynn. Shay has been acting and modeling professionally for several years, and was actually a cheerleader in high school. Shay recently starred in the feature film Hottieboombalottie.
How will the budget be used?
Everyone knows that movies cost money to make. The money for our budget will be divided up, based on how much we raise, to fund the following:
- Paying the actors.
- Paying the crew.
- Paying the post-production team (sound, special effects, composer, etc.)
- Food for the cast and crew during production. (we're thrifty, but we've got to eat)
- Location rentals (we have to pay to use the High School and their van)
- Props and costumes.
- Equipment rentals.
- Equipment and supply purchases.
- Kickstarter perks and rewards.
- Promotion and marketing.
What if you exceed your budget?
Exceeding our budget would be ideal. As mentioned in the pitch video, $50,000 is the minimum budget we need to make this movie. There are really three budget options to make this movie:
$50,000 - The bare bones budget
$150,000 - The decent budget
$250,000 - The ideal budget
We are prepared to make the complete movie if all we raise is $50,000. But know that this will be the bare bones version. If you liked what you saw in the trailer, that is what most of the movie will look like. It will still be cool and exciting, but not as close to the director's true vision.
The screenplay calls for some very cool CGI (computer generated image) shots, compositing of explosions, gunshots and the like, as well as dangerous stunt work. We will only be able to pull off these very exciting effects if we can exceed our minimum budget. Exceeding our minimum budget will also mean that we can hire some additional crew to help make this movie even better. It will also mean that we won't have to rush and can take our time on a few shots to make sure that we get just what we need. If you noticed, there are no gunshots, explosions, CGI graphics or elaborate stunts in the trailer. Why, you ask? It's quite simple - those things cost money to do right. So if you want to see this movie done the way it should be done, give big and convince your friends to do the same. We were able to demonstrate in the trailer what we are able to accomplish with almost no budget, so you can only imagine how cool this movie will be if we blow our goal out of the water.
