Help renowned master luthier Tom Ribbecke get a start on his dream of an educational center for the luthiery arts.

The Project

Tom Ribbecke is planning to establish the Ribbecke Center for Stringed Instrument Research & Development, Teaching and Luthiery Arts.

It has long been Tom's dream to establish a center for the advancement of knowledge in the field of guitar and stringed instruments making. This will be a modern day version of the Maestro Richard Schneider's  Kasha Design Seminar, Lost Mountain Center for the Guitar, which closed upon Richard's sudden passing in 1997.
We have all experienced the Golden Age of guitarmaking in the United States over the past 15 years, and many of the great makers who have spent a lifetime in the field are retiring and have incredible arcane knowledge of the process.

The Ribbecke Center for Stringed Instrument Research & Development, Teaching and Luthiery Arts, will invite the best and brightest in the field, as well as the related violin family of makers from around the world to come and teach classes in all aspects of design, construction, innovation  and career enhancement, as well as classes taught by the resident instructors Tom Ribbecke, Stuart Day and Maegan Wells. These classes will range from one day to two week formats depending on the guest speaker and/or the content. The Center will publish this information and apply scientific testing to codify data and produce media, including video, podcasts and live streaming in downloadable modular form.  The Center will also sponsor player workshops with invited musicians. The Center will establish a foundation to all for the study of related fields such as the role of music and sound in the healing arts. Tom will continue to build his private practice instruments at the facility.

Bio:

Tom Ribbecke has been a leader in the field of guitar making for many years and is acknowledged as one of the top three Master Luthiers in the world. His career spans 40 years, with appearances in The Smithsonian, the MOMI in Boston, among others. He has taught many of the successful professionals practicing in the field today and has a unique relationship with this group of artisans. He is the past president and many year board member of the Association of Stringed Instrument Artisans A.S.I.A , and has been published  extensively in The Guild of American Luthiers magazine: "American Luthierie", as well as one of the founders of the Healdsburg Guitarmaking Festival, now the most important show in the world for makers and players. His tool designs are used extensively by many builders around the world. He has been working on his patented innovative Halfling style guitars for the last 7 years and they are seen and played all over the world.

Ribbecke Guitars and BassesAll Ribbecke Guitars and Basses are 100% "Made in America". Tom has resisted efforts in the past to merge with companies that were interested in mass-producing knock-off Ribbecke guitars for a "quick buck". All Ribbecke Guitars and Basses are of the same quality and always "Made in America".

Why We Need Your SupportWe have the opportunity to purchase at under market value the ideal location for this venue, where Tom's home and shop have been located for 12 years and the future The Ribbecke Center for Stringed Instrument Research & Development, Teaching and Luthiery Arts will be located.

1......Halfling™ Electric Chambered Guitar, inlayed with your initials and signed by the crew. Highest quality, custom made, with your choice of color. This guitar utilizes technologies of the Testadura instruments from Toms private practice; in the anchoring of the bridge and tailpiece into a sub top Rosewood or Wenge block. It has the structure and rock stability at high volume of a true chambered electric. It has the bite and high-end crunch of a solid body but has the enhanced integrity and presence in the mids and bass of the Testadura hollow-body. The top and chambering is asymmetrical and if you tap on both sides of the bridge you will hear the octave separation of the chambers. (pledge does not include international shipping and tariffs, since all countries vary) 2......Signed DVD copy of the March 19-24, 2012 week-long Guitar Making class and demonstration by Master Luthier, Tom Ribbecke (estimated delivery - August, 2012) See the Lance Keltner & Bobby Vega demo here: http://youtu.be/hqdhUJ3_reM

1......Bobby Vega Signature Halfling™ Bass, signed by Bobby Vega. If you appreciate a more versatile instrument, the Bobby Vega Bass' varied tonal palette will be perfect for you! It has a rich harmonic with a round, warm sound quality. The strings are physically longer, due to the tailpiece, making the feel a bit looser. The Bobby Vega Bass has an X braced, solid carved top which is flatter on the bass side and more highly arched on the treble side. It has a solid carved back and a 34" scale neck. The built in bridge pickup is custom made for us by Kent Armstrong. Highest quality, custom made with your choice of color, 4 string, fret or fretless, full arch top, carved top and back, 17" body, 34" scale length, with jazz tail piece. Bruce Forman's donated Ribbecke Halfling Guitar "Scarlett". Upon hearing about Tom's plans for the Healdsburg property, Bruce Forman immediately offered up his one-of-a-kind Ribbecke Halfling. Proceeds from the sale will go towards funding the Center. Here is what Bruce had to say: "Tom Ribbecke has been a defining member of the archtop luthier elite...Now, he has an opportunity to create a center for this important artistic pursuit, one which will encompass his guitar making, teaching the time-honored traditions, crafting innovative designs, providing a performance space and music educational environment in Healdsburg, the cradle of fine guitar artistry. In support of his efforts, I am offering my Ribbecke Halfling, Scarlett, (with custom-made Glenn Cronkhite leather gig bag) with all the proceeds going to assist in funding this essential effort. My guitar has been featured in recordings, movies and numerous live dates throughout our time together. Believe me, I don't give her up lightly, but I am confident that it is the right thing to do and that Tom will be able to recreate her magic and enable me to dance with yet another amazing creation. The lucky person who ends up with Scarlett will be fortunate to have a 'worked-in' beauty with impressive provenance and will know they are contributing to a legacy that will endure, one that brings music to a better world."
