The Written World is a multiplayer storytelling game which lives on the internet, it's being made by playlab London who are Simon Fox, Toby Green and Anna Fogg.
Beta tester applications are now being received on the official forum: http://thewrittenworld.activeboard.com/t48449272/beta-tester-applications/
If you are interested in applying for a testing session please create an account and follow the instructions there.
Where have all the backers gone? Nobody seems to be posting on here, and there are about 2-4 active users on the forums. Those of you who haven't registered, why not go do so - I'm sure the forum will be much more lively if we had a few more new users there!
Did my response to your message make it through alright? My messages tab has been playing up a little and I'm not sure if the reply got stopped by a bug or something.
In case anybody missed it, there's been a couple of blog posts at http://www.thewrittenworld.co/ with a bit of new information.
Hey Matthew -
You'll hear from us before the week is out, thanks for asking!
We've been contacting people about rewards in the meantime, and opening discussion with our 'Inner Circle' pledges as to how to structure their involvement in the development process.
We're also discussing how best to support more conversation from all of our incredibly generous pledges - as I say we'll be posting some info for you by the end of the week.
Simon
Do you have an ETA on when we'll hear from you next? I'm quite happy to wait until you're ready to publish more information, I was just curious as to what kind of timeframe you have planned.
Hey Isobel,
Yes we'd love to see the same. Certainly the way we currently structure story-telling it's possible to dip in and out.
:D so stoked for you guys!! Would love to see this become a mobile application in the future ( I know you dont have to scope for it at the moment )...like a more interesting twitter, something you can do whilst your on the go (which isn't retweeting or people twittering about their day) I see it going the same way as we have in becoming bored of reality tv etc...but when you can create something a bit more personal and engross other people in it...i think that would be really neat....
Well done Written World! :)
Hey Thanks Matt!
Yep you're right. Other stats:
- the average donation amount was $60.91
- Facebook brought in the most pledgers, but direct traffic brought the most money
- $4k was pledged from internal Kickstarter referrals, the rest externally
I'm so glad this got the funding it truly deserves! Looking forward to playing & writing with everyone :D
Here, have a graph of the various reward levels: http://img705.imageshack.us/img705/9788/writtenworldstats.png
As you can see, the beta tester and hero rewards were most popular, and 19 people donated without choosing a reward.
Heh, we ended up with exactly 300 backers.
It's been a pretty wild ride these last few days that's for sure JD :)
I am shocked, stunned, BUT REALLY HAPPY this is funded.
Fantastic! Well done gents! We look forward to becoming a part of this revolutionary gaming community you've created! Keep up the good work!
Hi Willie -
We're working on ways to make this a sustainable endeavour - of course without finding a way to bring more money in we can only live for so long.
We'll communicate more when things are more certain rather than speculating - but we do always want The Written World to be free to use to write stories.
This is such a fantastic idea and I'm so glad the goal has been reached. One thing I'm wondering though, are you actually planning on making this a completely free thing, or is it going to be 'free to play'? I don't really see how that would work for something like this, but it does seem an awful lot like it deserves to get some money from players.
Hey Andrew
With the budget we're looking at, I don't think a separate mobile app development is feasible, but we will be working hard to build something which is compatible with webkit browsers.
I would love to see a mobile version of this as well. Where you perhaps play through to a certain location on your pc, but later could continue on your mobile device.
*imagine
Sweet. I like to imaging a series of stories that all feature a certain location, gradually revealing lore about that location until the final story reveals the secret that links all the stories together.
Hey Matthew -
Yes you can absolutely re-use locations. We're still making design decisions about exactly how the map will work, and testing and iterating will be a process you guys are all involved in.
Quick question - when creating stories, are you able to re-use locations you've already created (for example, in one story the hero locks an item in a vault, and in a later story a different hero retrieves that item) or do you need to recreate them each time?
I did another blitz last night pointing out "just under $1000 to go - let's make it happen!" kinda post. Really glad to see you've hit your goals! Just points out how each and every person counts! Can't wait to see what you build.
Congratulations on getting funded! I was anxiously checking back every day for the past week hoping to see that it'd hit 100% -- and I'm so happy that it has and super excited to play the game!
Aww thanks Kyon - Look at that, what a handsome figure.
after thinking it for a while I changed to the $25 reward as there was only $10 left to reach the 18k. Congrats!
Wow Matthew! Thanks so much! Looking forward to talking more soon..
I just switched from $50 to $200. I'm optimistically all in. No idea how that reward works but I'm excited. Congrats guys!
Thanks Joshua!
We're looking forward to keeping everyone posted!
Congrats on getting your funding! I'm really excited to hear constant updates on the dev progress and start testing! Such a cool idea.
Thanks Drew, Simon!
And Matt - amazingly it's still climbing!
Irfon-Kim - It certainly has been a ride, these last few days have been quite intense. Thanks for the congratulations.
Whoo hoo! I only just found out about (and backed) this project yesterday, but it's been a roller-coaster ride waiting to see if it would meet the funding target in time. :) Congratulations!
Booya!
Amazing! Congratulations to all involved.
Let's see if we can make $18000 before the timer runs out - I'm sure there are plenty of people who haven't donated yet.
Thanks Alejandro!
Woohoo! I am pleased this project has made the funding! :)
Incredible, and still pledges coming in!
We're putting together a message to thank our backers but I just want to say here as well that this is an incredible honour and we are of course utterly delighted.
We're also totally aware the hard work starts now! We're thrilled for the chance to put something awesome together.
Success!
I can also inform you that there'll be at least $5-12 coming in later today - my brother wants to contribute but he can't until both him and our dad are home so that they can make the payment through his account.
Ruqiyah, Thankyou, Matthew, THANKYOU and of course I think we all deserve this:

Typo, $70 not £70
VICTORY
(Just made a £70 pledge, boosting it over the target)
Just put my pledge up from $25 to $70 - not because I think you need it to hit $17,500 - I think it's pretty obvious you will - but because I was thinking about this project and realised how brilliant it will be when completed, and how involved I want to be in it. Wish I could be the person to donate the last $51, though!
Thanks James, And to you as well Tim - very generous both of you!
We're so close now, and it's incredibly heartening seeing support from you all.
Gosh, things seem to have come along a little bit since I first commented.
Somebody, please push this one over the edge. I upped my pledge a little - if a few other people do the same, then that target can get hit.
Good luck, guys.
Bump to 17... 11 hours... this one MUST go forward....
Jason: it's as good a definition of viral as I need to hear! And yes we'll be delighted to put your $50 to great use.
Briana: That's fantastic! Thanks so much.
I've been watching this there were 23 days to go.. I just started my new job so I can afford to put my 25 in, I'm so happy I was able to before the deadline.. I'm really really hoping that this can get the rest it needs.
