About this project

NYC faces the worst homeless situation since the Great Depression. Every night, 35,475 are homeless in NYC. 16,000 children and 9000 families live in shelters.

Clothing the Line is dedicated to raising awareness, generating dialogue, and sparking policy change to end homelessness. A non-profit collaboration between homeless organizations, arts organizations, the city, and people like you will help reduce the suffering of thousands.

How it works:

The Installation
A studio apartment will be installed in a public park. Over a period of four weeks, the public will purchase donated clothing for $1 each at partnering museums, galleries, theaters, and other participating locations. Each article of clothing will be hung on a frame surrounding the apartment creating 20 foot tall by 20 foot wide walls made from 35,475 clothes. One article of clothing for each homeless person in New York City which, depending of the final condition, will be donated to the homeless after the project is complete.

Homeless Stories
We will interview homeless persons in New York City and collect stories of how they became homeless. Signs will be attached to various articles of clothing on the structure reading, “Hear My Story” with a phone number below. Visitors will be able to call this number from their cell phone and hear a recording of how this person became homeless.

The Performances
Once the clothing walls are complete, free performances begin inside the apartment. Collaborating theatre companies, artists, and musicians will perform pieces inspired from the homeless interviews. For example, The Windmill Factory will create eleven 3 minute scenes staged inside the ‘home’ portraying stories of how different people became homeless. One by one visitors will push through the clothes and enter the apartment. Alone with the performer, enclosed by the ghosts of homeless people under the NYC sky, each person will experience one scene. If you come with 5 friends you will see 5 different scenes encouraging dialogue about the performance and the issue.
