The State Theatre presents "The Voodoo Chalk Circle," setting Brecht's masterpiece in New Orleans after hurricane Katrina.
April 9 - May 8
"Meant to communicate the endurance of the human spirit..."
Adapted by Chelsea Marcantel, a playwright who lived in New Orleans during the tragedy of Katrina.
For weeks she survived in her crowded apartment with her friends without power and little food, waiting for rescue. Several years later Artistic Director Tim Speicher approached Chelsea to adapt Brecht's "Caucasian Chalk Circle" and set it in New Orleans. The politics of the play had been discussed, but Chelsea wanted to take the sense of disorientation and fear she felt in Katrina and the characters felt in the war and turn it into a fable.
The result is electrifying.
Much like the city of New Orleans itself, this production is being constantly rebuilt, literaly. The set is built as we go, every element of the show is created live, from the lights to the music. Meant to communicate the endurance of the human spirit against a background of fantastic imagery from the rich cultures of New Orleans.
Giving to this production is supporting the expression of thousands that endured in Louisiana, and who endure every day in hopes of improving their lives. The State Theatre of Chicago strives to tell relevant stories in penetrative ways. We're not telling stories for ourselves, but to improve the lives of everybody who comes to see them.
