Update #6: Project done and DONE!
Howdy y'all!
First of all, thanks so much to all of you that made this project possible! We have finished it and have shipped out the CDs. We sure hope you get as much enjoyment out of this as we have had making it for you!
Also, there are some of you out there who backed the project but have not received your reward. Sorry about that! One of two things has happened...
1) Perhaps you have not sent us your address?
2) You have sent your address, but your reward (cd, etc) has not arrived due to some error.
If you are one of these folks, please send your address to our email, ThePurpleHulls@gmail.com
As soon as we get your shipping address and confirm your reward level, we'll get your reward out ASAP! Please do not send your address through Kickstarter or as a comment to this update...it's very important that we receive this information as an email to ThePurpleHulls@gmail.com
Once again, thank you all so much! We'd be honored for you to help spread the word about "The Hulls", and please let folks know that the record is for sale by mail at www.ThePurpleHulls.com and also on iTunes/Amazon/etc.
God bless,
Ben, Katy, and Penny :)
Update #5: Mixing is DONE! Woohoo!
We finished mixing TONIGHT! And, I couldn't WAIT to let you hear one of the tracks. Of course, the sound isn't near as good as it will be when you receive your very own copy of the album, but maybe it'll give you a little taste :)
Most all the songs on the record are straight ahead bluegrass, but we couldn't help recording a couple on piano, but still with a grassy feel. Check out the video to one of our favorite songs, "How Deep the Father's Love For Us"!
More updates coming soon! Thank y'all again so very much!
Ben
Update #4: Closer than EVER!
Howdy y'all!
I just wanted to shoot out a quick update. We're almost done! We've mixed 10 of the 12 tracks, and we'll be finishing the final 2 this weekend. Tuesday, we'll be sending it to the mastering house here in Nashville where it will have the finishing touches put on the tracks to prepare for duplication. We hope to send off the final product to the duplicators sometime mid next week, and can expect about a 2-3 week return time. At that point, we'll be shipping out the product and we can't WAIT for y'all to hear it.
This has been a lot of hard work, but it has been such a blessing as well. Because of you, we were able to have some of the best talent in the world take part in this project. The project is being mixed by Brent King (legendary engineer), and mastered by Hank Williams (not that Hank :), who has mastered countless #1 hits and received numerous Grammies for his work.
For those of you that opted for the $100 reward and up, be sure to fill out the survey I've sent you so that we know what name to list in our "Thank You" section. It's important that we have that by this Monday. Thanks! For the rest of you, you'll be receiving an email survey within the next couple weeks asking for your address and some other details.
Once again, thank you all so much for your support!

Update #3: Tracking DONE!
I have to tell you, folks...the last 3 days have been a whirlwind! After three hectic 12+ hour days in Ricky Skaggs' studio in Hendersonville, TN, we have finished recording all the instrumental tracks for the album! Now that we have all the instrumentation recorded, we'll go to Sony Studio B on Music Row to record our vocals for the 12 track project. Lord willing, in about 7 days from now we'll have all the raw tracks ready to be mixed together. At that point, we'll go back into "Skaggs' Place" studio and spend a few days mixing the record and making it shine :) We had a special treat yesterday when Ricky dropped by the studio to say "hi". We've all had the chance to meet Ricky several times in the past, and have even had the pleasure of playing the Grand Ole Opry on the same night as him, but it was good to get to spend some time hanging out and shootin' the bull with a true musical legend and one of our personal heroes! You know, Ricky met his wife Sharon in our hometown...Kilgore, Texas! Small world, huh? Apparently there used to be a bluegrass festival there in the 70's, and the band Ricky was playing with (Emmylou Harris) was on the same bill as Sharon White (The White's)...the rest is history :)
I'll keep you all posted as we move into the next stage, and I'll try my best to put up a video or two of us in the studio before too long. Thanks again for all your support! This would not be possible without every single one of you!
-Ben, Penny, and Katy
Update #2: Project Funded!
THANK YOU, folks, for your unbelievable support and helping us to reach our goal to fund this bluegrass gospel project! We were able to sneak up to Ricky Skaggs' studio today for a pre-production meeting with our producer/fiddle player, Andy Leftwich.
We've got 12 songs picked out for the album, and an incredible band to pick with us and lend their support in the studio next week.
Fiddle/Producer: Andy Leftwich
Bass: Byron House
Dobro: Rob Ickes
Guitar: Bryan Sutton
Percussion: Stan Saxon
We're going to take pictures for our album artwork tomorrow and spend the rest of the week rehearsing for the project. Attached is a video introducing our producer, Andy, as well as a couple photos I took in Ricky's studio. What a place to record a bluegrass record!!! Thanks again, y'all! We'll keep you posted as we proceed the next few weeks!

You could easily say these folks were made to make music together. Though their paths from Texas to and through Music City have been diverse, they’re finally able to combine their talents and focus their efforts as a family. Deriving their name from the crop that helped put them through college and food on their table, “The Purple Hulls” are no strangers to the music business and life on the stage. “Banjo” Ben resigned from his job with Taylor Swift to sign a publishing deal at Sony ATV, along with twins Penny and Katy. After a year of writing, The Purple Hulls are hitting the road, making sure to showcase their unique harmonies only a family can achieve while ripping the strings off any instrument they can get their hands on. If you’re looking for authentic, acoustic-driven country and bluegrass music delivered at its best, your search is over.
