A multimedia performance of dance, video and verbatim theater. A hybrid rich study of quizzical realities. (say quizzical realities 10 times--fast!)
"The Projects is a candid and dynamic work of performance art" --NY Times
IT IS!!!--but the NY Times (and the world) just doesn't know it.
It will definitely be performed at the Fringe Festival in Kansas City, MO July 27th, 28th and 29th 2010. AND It enlist elements of verbatim, multimedia and dance theatre to explore an intersection of diversity in today's corporate environment. The projects as a housing experiment addressed social, economic and cultural differences and now has a counterpart in the modern business mall.
Downtown Kansas City is the workplace of artists from the visual to performance, people in government and law offices, restaurant proprietors and patrons, journalists, staff and visitors. The Projects gives them a chance to speak on their view of each other, of themselves and of their public/private lives...
With this collaboration Cat Johnson (choreographer), Nick Howell (composer), Drew Bolton (videographer), Jake Johannes (production/lighting), and Jay Akin (theatre) are asking...
What kind of community is being created? What is being exchanged and/or transformed in order to accommodate it? What are the norms of the individuals and sub-cultures? Just as in the housing units, the neat typologies of cultural forms found in standard writings barely scratch the surface of the complexities and paradoxes that exist in such organizational facilities.
WHAT DO WE WANT?!....WHEN DO WE WANT IT?!
We are hoping (begging, praying, meditating and auctioning body parts) to raise $600 to complete the cost of the the production. This will cover the cost of completing the set, designed and lit by Jake Johannes consisting of two square-like structures based upon the classic Herman Miller office. The set is mobile and its walls uneven allowing for different configurations to reflect the moods and thoughts of the interviewed. It gives itself over to highly inventive interaction by the dancers and the actors due to the simplicity of its design. It reinforces the idea of the environment that inspired its creation WITHOUT replicating it.
The set also includes video projection of pre-recorded scenes directed and edited by Drew Bolton featuring movement by Cat Johnson and acting by Jay Akin. The video is projected onto two screens and is inter spliced with the live action on stage.
If we raise more money (that'd be great!) we will get to:
$800: pay for costume designed by the RIDICULOUSLY talented Phil Shafer
$1400: (drum roll please) pay the performers (six AMAZING dancers and two EXCEPTIONAL ACTORS)
We're offering rewards that others can only dream of
You are making our dreams come true
Cheers and here's to seeing you from the stage!
