About this project

THE SKY'S THE LIMIT

Thank you all and please continue to contribute!

The recent outpouring of generosity has exceeded our expectations! It just goes to show that our family, friends, colleagues, and community are truly amazing. From the bottom of our hearts, THANK YOU VERY MUCH!

With only a few days left, we at Periscope are already so grateful that we’re able to fulfill the most immediate needs of our students. With continued support, we have high hopes to also be able to provide educational opportunities through the fall and beyond!

Any additional funds raised will help ensure longevity for Periscope’s unique multidisciplinary programming. The underdeveloped East Village district of San Diego can benefit so much from the amenities for art, education, and urban renewal that Periscope fosters and there are many deserving young people we hope to reach.  Thank you for your continued support and keep spreading the word!

THE PROJECT

Designed by resident contemporary artists, architects, and educators, the first annual Periscope Urban Laboratory will teach high school students drawing, photography, video-making, construction, hydroponic gardening, and critical thinking skills as potent tools for urban analysis, public art, and environmental sustainability.

Each lab in the series will guide high school students in producing an analytically engaging artistic response to a contemporary regional urban issue and will culminate in a gallery show at the end of the summer. More importantly, we hope to equip students with valuable technical, visual, and aesthetic communication tools necessary to understand, interpret, and critically respond to the urgent urban challenges they face.

We already have the space, skilled instructors, and community support. With your help, the next step is equipment and supplies.

YOUR SUPPORT WILL PROVIDE VITAL FUNDING FOR:

  • Support for underprivileged students
  • Desks, chairs, and other classroom furniture
  • Web and network system
  • Multimedia equipment, including a projector and video equipment
  • Finalization of Periscope's non-profit 501(c)3 status
  • and many other key educational resources

WHAT PERISCOPE HAS ACCOMPLISHED SO FAR

The Periscope Project serves downtown San Diego by providing a platform in support of art, redefining architecture, and addressing regional urban issues. For over a year, we’ve been able to maintain a gallery, host exhibitions, and provide free workspace and amenities for students, artists, architects, designers, scholars, and activists committed to improving the community. Now we need your help to expand our programming and inspire the next generation!

OUR LONG-TERM GOALS

This summer lab will serve as the first of many opportunities for grade-school through college level students.  We also hope to offer ongoing, free educational access to individuals with limited financial resources. Ultimately, the Periscope Project Urban Laboratory seeks to expose students to college level content, provide mentorship opportunities with professors and educators from local universities, and foster practical and conceptual skills necessary for success in redefining the urban landscape.

Please donate and spread the word. The more people who see our Kickstarter page, the more likely we are to meet our goals!
