Photo-main

The Italian Market will be a food cart serving South Philly inspired street food in downtown Portland, Oregon.

Cheese-steaks are for tourists.

We want to open an Italian food cart here in Portland, Oregon inspired by our hometown, Philadelphia. Portland is the #1 street food city in the world right now, and we wanted to be a part of the movement and bring a new food concept to the west coast. If you really want to taste what Philadelphia loves, go no further than the Italian Market.  We could not have moved to Portland without bringing our love with us:  braised pork, Italian brisket, meatballs, homemade pasta, hand crafted cheese, roasted tomatoes and eggplant.

At The Italian Market food cart, we will deliver the best of South Philly.  We make our own fresh mozzarella and serve our sandwiches on Alessio's hand-crafted bread to bring you that fresh Italian taste you've been missing from back east.

Why Kickstarter?

Your Kickstarter donations will help us fund the construction of our food cart. We had commissioned a cart in March with the plan of moving here to Portland and being open this fall.  When we arrived in Portland we found the concession builder we had under contract had taken our money and closed up shop. Through Kickstarter, we can raise attention and wide spread support over the internet. If we don't reach our goal of $11,000, we don't see a dime and everybody gets their money back.  With the help of Kickstarter we are able to say thanks with some sweet rewards!

Who We Are

Two love birds who's second love is authentic, South Philly-style Italian cuisine. We've spent the last two years preparing to launch our food cart here in Portland, and we are so close we can taste it!

Andrew enjoys all things food & sports, and the occasional home brewing session.

Erin loves the great outdoors and is happiest sleeping in a tent or barefoot in the grass.

The Location

Anxiously awaiting the day we pull up to the 10th and Alder pod in downtown Portland.

Our inspiration is our favorite Philadelphia sandwiches & family recipes. We are offering a truly authentic menu worthy of the Italian Market name.

Windows: $400

Lighting: $300

Exhaust Fan: $250

We already have a great big broiler for toasting up delicious sandwiches!

  • We still need:
  • gas stove and oven
  • 3 part deep dish washing sink/hand sink
  • Water heater - we already have the pump!
  • Fresh Water & Grey Water Tanks
  • Refrigeration

Thank you

An extra special thanks to the people that have helped us get to where we are so far:

  • Our parents and family.  We love you. Thank you for having us.
  • Our friends. You thought we were nuts but cheered us on the whole time.
  • Chris D'Ambro. Culinary mentor and friend.
  • Brett Burmeister of www.foodcartsportland.com for countless emails and sage wisdom.
  • Lawrence Ho. Friend and musician. Check out more of his music at www.brotherhanmusic.com
  • Jess Scone. Famous Vegan. Little munchkin.
  • The Plough & the Stars.  Erin met almost all of her favorite faces here, including Andrew.  Thank goodness.  Best Irish pub outside Ireland.

Thank you everyone for your support! Any extra funds will go towards securing a truck to haul the trailer, and every little bit helps!

Risks and challenges Learn about accountability on Kickstarter

Whenever anyone starts a new business, there are speed bumps along the way. We are not immune to this. As much work as we have already done, we still have a long way to go. With your Kickstarter donations, there will be a lot of work to do building the cart. We have a new builder working with us to help us construct our dream cart as cost effectively as possible. By now we have done a lot more research and have a better understanding of where we can go for building and restaurant supplies here in Portland and what we need to pass health inspection. There is still a lot of work to be done.

The progress between the brain storming and business planning stage and actually getting up an running has been long and slow. This may cause more challenges. Our online presence has plateaued lately as a result in our long awaited opening, and once we have an opening date in mind we will have to put a lot of effort into putting the word out. Opening in the middle of winter can be tricky and we will really have to up our marketing campaign. Our location was estimated to be available within the next month, and we may miss it if we take too long to complete our cart and have in inspected. We may need to find another location here in Portland, which is not impossible but may effect which hours are our busiest and who we are marketing to. Thankfully, with Andrew's degree in Marketing and Erin's degree in Graphic Design, we have a lot of strengths that will help us with a successful launch.

Moving to a new town to open a new business has been a giant risk and challenge in itself. We have already come so far, and I think our strongest asset with be our determination. We came 3,000 miles with our dog and cat stowed under the seats. We saved for rent, insurance, and our initial food order. With your help, we will be ready to keep pushing and to bring amazing Philadelphia Italian street food here to Portland, Oregon!
