"I don't see it," he said to me.

I pointed toward a seemingly random place on the print, traced my finger along a loose arc, and said "Look here."

He looked. I traced another, similar arc somewhere else. "Now look here. It's the same arc but warped a bit by the other variations in the pattern. Now look for another. See it?"

He smiled that special smile of discovery. "I get it. I see it now."

The art was fractal. Digitally generated by some underlying mathematical formula. The transforms, the patterns, the variations are all part of it. The patterns are sometimes confusing, sometimes hard to find, but they are there nonetheless. The art is often hauntingly beautiful, but a lot of people are unaware that exists.

Lovely Math is an attempt to bring more fractal art to the world by putting it in books. The fractal patterns are to escape the digital world into the strange territory of "meat space." The ultimate goal is to pay the publishing costs of the book, get it out for distribution, and promote it properly to get fractals the exposure I feel they should get.

The money for the project will go toward getting publication of the book set up, get some copies printed, and it get available for sale. It will also go toward covering the costs of shipping books here to be signed, shipping them to those that pledged, and also covering the costs of the prints and original art. It will also cover some promotion and advertising so the book doesn't get completely ignored.

International pledges that are getting things sent to them, please add like $10 to $20 extra to cover shipping costs. I think that should be enough.
