About this project

Every summer the Toronto Fringe and SummerWorks theatre festivals showcase some of the best new plays that Canada has to offer. Despite their success, however, it's proven difficult to bring even the biggest festival hits across the border to the continent's largest market - New York City. We'd like think those days are over.

Since 2004, The Bridge Theatre Company has sought to promote and produce Canadian theatre in New York City. Working with both emerging and established Canadian playwrights, our objective is to establish a permanent Canadian presence in the biggest English-speaking theatre community in the world through readings, workshops, and full productions.

This season's "Winter Workshop Series" mirrors similar initiatives in years past. Two hugely successful festival plays by two enormously talented Canadian playwrights are workshopped, developed and presented at our resident studio facility in the heart of New York's theatre district:

GREENLAND, by Nicolas Billon, directed by Ravi Jain.
Receding ice levels off the coast of Greenland have revealed that an area thought to be part of the mainland is actually a separate island. This discovery mirrors a growing rift between the island's discoverer and his increasingly distant family, set adrift after a catastrophic loss.
Awarded the 2009 SummerWorks Prize for Outstanding Production and the NOW Magazine Audience Choice Award, GREENLAND will premiere at The Bridge with your help on February 4, 2010.

THE SWEARING JAR, by Kate Hewlett, directed by Rosemary Andress. “You are the love of my life, you asshole.” Simon and Carey are the perfect couple. But when Carey performs at Simon's fortieth birthday celebration, she is forced to come to terms with the greatest lie her husband ever told.
A "Best Of The Fringe" and "Patron's Pick" at the 2008 Toronto Fringe Festival, THE SWEARING JAR will premiere at The Bridge with your help on March 19, 2010.

To produce this series and develop these works, we humbly ask for your support. Our total budget for both workshops is $3905, which covers the costs of rehearsal & performance space, P.R., fundraising, travel and stipends for the artists. Money raised beyond our goal will help fund future Bridge productions.

To reward your contributions to this wonderful project, we've enlisted the support of our friends at The Walrus Magazine, Fear The Leaf, EMI Music Canada, MoMA, Five Leaves, and The Bridge Project (no relation).

Thanks for reading. We'd greatly appreciate your help.

Sincerely,

Esther Barlow & Dustin Olson, Artistic Producers

The Bridge

Straightpin New York, NY

The Bridge Theatre Company is a New York City ensemble of Canadian and American theatre artists dedicated to the cross-border development, workshop and production of new plays. The company examines the relationship between these two contemporary theatrical cultures through the work of emerging playwrights, actors and directors.

Through its New Play Development program, the Bridge accepts a wide variety of script submissions from writers in the United States and Canada, hoping to discover and develop new plays that can examine everything from the bridges between two nations to the bridges between two people.
