A documentary about the evolution of the Beat Movement and beyond with Los Angeles as our starting point.
Over the past 2 decades the city of Los Angeles has been the home to an ever evolving and vibrant music scene. Beginning at the turn of the millennium the city gave birth to a new dimension of sound which focused its attention not on the vocalists as it had in the past, but the gritty bass-induced frequencies of the hip-hop instrumental, more commonly known as, the Beat.
A set of talented Los Angeles DJ’s stood on the frontier of what soon became known as the LA Beat Scene. Among these artists were Kutmah Fresh, DJ Take aka Sweatson Klank, Eric Coleman, and Orlando who would put history into motion by starting a night called, Sketchbook. Soon after Sketchbook had run its course, Low End Theory would emerge to carry the torch for the Beat Movement to enter its next phase.
Many artists have been able to develop careers stemming directly from the movement - Some of which are becoming very well known, like Flying Lotus, Ras G, Nosaj Thing, Sweatson Klank, Shlohmo, D33J, just to name a few. Today the beat scene continues to grow and flourish, constantly adding new artists to the mix who push the boundaries of music forward.
Chris Cole, aka Black Monk, was lucky enough to be a part of the early days as a musician, producer and engineer. Writer and historian for this film, Chris will lead us through the intricate web of people, places, and things that help shape the Beat Movement and its evolution. We will be capturing footage not only for the feature-length documentary film, but also for an episode based series to be released during the production of the film.
To achieve this mission, we need your help. By supporting this project you’ll be contributing to the history of this rich and evolving movement. Join us to help document the movement, it’s footprint in history, and everything in between.
