Happily Ever After
Hey all! It's Greg, one-half of the creative team behind Super Sidekick: The Musical.
I just wanted to take a minute and give y'all a peek at the story behind the story, and how this play helped me find my own "Happily Ever After."
I started developing Super Sidekick back in 2006. Before this project I'd never tried writing anything before in my life, and the theatre company I was a part of at that time was starting up a writer's lab. Always looking for new ways to challenge myself, I decided to sign up. I had no idea how that would change my life.
When I first started writing the show, my sister-in-law was pregnant with my nephew, Brody. His impending arrival would mark my first time as an uncle. Being a broke actor, I couldn't really afford any sort of gift, so I decided to dedicate my project to him. Wanting to start him off properly with an introduction to the geek culture I loved so much, I decided to write a superhero story. Character names were lifted from years and years of D&D Campaigns (the lead heroes' names were taken from two characters played by some of my best friends from high school). Writing the show took about three months, and at the end of that period, I had a short play that I was quite proud of.
This is where things really get interesting. Our workshop culminated in a staged reading. Now, our company at the time was always taking on new members, and recently a new pretty face had appeared on the headshot board in our lobby that had caught my eye. I'd never really met her in person, so I was really surprised when she e-mailed me out of the blue, saying she was interested in being a part of the first reading of the show. Of course, I was happy to bring her on. The reading was quite successful, and a few days later that cute girl e-mailed me again, saying that she really enjoyed being a part of it, and suggested that I take my one-act play and turn it into a musical.
Well, that cute girl and I started dating. About a year later, we got engaged. Around the same time, I put out a call for composers on CraigsList. Mike was the first person to reply to my ad, and after meeting with him I cancelled the rest of my appointments. Mike and I started collaborating on music for the show while my fiance and I were wedding planning.
Flash forward about two years later. Specifically to July 18th, 2010. That's the date that Super Sidekick: The Musical first premiered, produced by the company I co-founded, Theatre Unleashed, and directed by Jenn Scuderi, better known as that cute girl I've been telling you about. Coincidentally, July 18th, 2010 marked our first Anniversary. If that's not Happily Ever After, I don't know what is. :)
