to anyone who is at all curious about the breakdown of costs i have not got it down to the dollar but my estimate is
6000 on mixing. This might end up being more since i will need instrumental versions (pretty standard)
2000 on mastering the record (i imagine it would be more with instrumental versions but i can always keep the mixes and have it mastered last minute if there is a sync opportunity)
1500 on making kickstarter backer prizes
3000 or so on pressing the album to CD and making art work
1500 on paying orchestra musicians (pretty good deal!)
there has been about 1-2000 in gear costs (new hard drive, drums, hardware .. etc)

in closing kickstarter is aptly named because it is to kickstart fundraising. not to fund 100% of the project.

    2. Ageof2.thumb
The Age of Rockets on August 15

Mike, I never said that 8000 was the total cost of what it would take to make the record. I am not sure why you think the camera money has anything to do with this album. Also with the camera 1600 was to get a low end canon and as the amount raised got higher the grade of camera purchased went up. There was no money left over from the camera kickstarter because i ended up getting a canon 7d and a nice lens that came to just under 3000. Also after kickstarter's 5% and the credit cards that were not cleared the amount made from the album kickstarter was closer to 8600. However that doesn't matter since I had always stated that the amount needed to make the album would be much more. Hiring a decent mixier for the record is at least 200 a song. 200 times 30 is 6000. Mastering is about 70 dollars a track. That is 2100. Paying cello and violin players has been about 1000 so far. Pressing the album will probably be about 3000 or so. There are a few other expenses that came up as well. I paid 300 for part of my friends drum kit so i could record drums on disc 3. I know you think you know what you are talking about but you do not and I have been upfront about the costs since day one. I have contacted kickstarter to make sure you get your 25 dollars back.

Let me be more clear. Time is NOT the issue. A kickstarter is an agreement between you and your supporters. You asked for $8000 to complete something. We gave you $9380.

Then, you asked for $1600 for a camera. Those supporters gave you $3300.

You set out on a project with a working budget of $9600 and were given $12600 in revenue. Any business would be thrilled to start with 33% than the forecast would be needed.

The Tipping Point for me, and others, is that you started another fundraiser for this same album/project and say you need an additional $6000 giving you now a budget of close to $20000 on something you originally forecast would require $8000. This puts you, I believe, in breach of contract with your original supporters here on this original project. We were funding a complete project, not 60% (or 46% if you include camera funds) of a project. If this were a business (and music is) the investors would shut you down.

So mock me and call me grumpy, make snide references in song if you like. But I feel your actions are not right.

Don't stress it mate. But seriously, could you make a reference to this "Mr. Finkle" in one of the songs. I think that would be quite amusing.

Andrew, I've given you a grand combined for your two successful Kickstarter projects & I don't regret or think you're fraudulently squandering the money. And even if this project was a fraud, I'm sure you would spent our money on something awesome like a movie set prop used for a Tarantino flick, but the prop never got any actual screen time (nor was seen in the deleted or behind the scenes DVD bonus features). But in doing so, I am positive you would let us know here, on facebook, twitter, tumblr and our emails of how you've redirected our money into the expensively priced item that doesn't really serve an actual purpose besides looks, nostalgia &/or sentiment, because it is just a prop and not an actual working item, but just an item portraying an item that does something. (Oh convoluted sentences, I love thee)

I don't question when or if the album is coming out, I question if and when you can convince and then get a hold of the others for more of The Robot Explosion or new OMWF podcasts, BUT if Ben Folds Five can reunite to record a few songs, I think The Robot Explosion can too! (BOLD STATEMENTS) As is goes "all good things com in time." Also patience is a virtue or so I was told.

The album is coming & I still have 100% full confidence in Andre Futral & The Age of Rockets.

We knew from the beginning (I think from a post or comment Andrew has written somewhere) that even if he successfully reached his Kickstarter goal, the money would only partially fund the record. This is not a regular 10 track album. This is THREE discs, THIRTY tracks.

I'm as eager anyone to hold the shiny new AoR album in my hands! I want it NOW! But I don't want Andrew to make a shitty record just for the sake of delivering it - I want him to finish & release it when its actually ready. You can't rush art you know ;)

Furthermore, our pledges are not simply donations. We are receiving goods in return (and I trust that Andrew will eventually deliver). I personally feel glad I was able to contribute what I could because I care about independent artists. I know its not a process you can rush and I'm willing to wait however long it takes. (Although before I'm old and deaf would be cool.)

Maybe Andrew could give us more frequent updates? Tell us not just about AoR shit, but other stuff you're working on! Mike, rethink getting a refund, the album will reach your ears eventually.

Chime down, have you not seen and listened to the progress Andrew and the band have been making? They sound ace btw.

The kid's talking nonsense. Pretty sure everyone here agrees with that.

Andrew, is it possible when the album is released to buy a physical copy? I know it was a kickstarter prize, but I'm feeling lonely because I couldn't afford two prizes. Even if it was a limited edition thing, that would be sweeeeet.

      Good luck, bro.

Good things take time. Really great things take a bit longer. And Super Pretentious things by Andrew and Co. take a couple of years. Be patient and these very busy, talented folk will provide us all with something worthy of the wait. This is of course, unless Andrew bought a plasma TV and a leather sofa from IKEA for his studio with his Kickstarter cash. In that case, I want a refund too! Good luck, Andrew! We are patiently looking forward to the finished product. (P.S. Maybe more frequent updates, even if you have to update us on your other projects, would help.)

      Nate Phillipps on August 14

The creative process is time-consuming. Even if you have everything ready to go, getting a finished product relies on several other people and entities. Hearing the band mature from The Drive Home to Hannah puts any doubts in my mind that this album will be epic and well worth the wait.

      Jacob Deaven on August 14

I donated to this project because I knew this album was going to be something amazing. Andrew has proven countless times that he is a talented producer/composer/musician. I made a personal investment, because I wanted to help make this album be the best it could be. Because I made an investment, I wasn't expecting a quick return. I would rather my investment go towards a project that is done right.
Now it has been awhile since we all made this same investment, but Andrew has made it clear that he is still working hard on the album. He has made posts on tumblr with audio clips, movies, and updates. He has been open with contributors who ask him about the progress of the album. I know this is the case, because he has been prompt with answering every silly question I've asked him.
Is the album taking time? Yes, but does that mean he is fraudulent? No, not at all. If you are worried about the album you should ask Andrew about it. Not post an angry message on kickstarter.

Wow fraudulent? that’s so far from the truth!!!

I have met and seen The Age Of Rockets play many times in the last 3 years. All members are all very honest people, specially Andrew! Anyone that follow’s a band know it usually takes them 2 years to put a new CD out and for this band they doing 3 versions for this CD, so I know it will take extra time.

PS. Andrew has put up the Age of Rock first 2 CD online for Free and he also has posted his other band Filed Mouse music for Free online too!

To me that does not sound like a guy that is just out to take your money!!!!

Fraudulent?! That's a bit uncalled for! We've had regular updates about the making of the record and Andrew always said it was hopefully going to be finished at the end of the year, still ages away. I am so looking forward to this record and would rather it was done right in however long it takes rather than for it to be rushed because of some impatient people.

I so regret helping this now. You've received close to $13,000 over the past 2 years and still no album. Now you want the public to give you more money. I'm sorry but I feel this is ridiculous and fraudulent. I've requested a refund from Kickstarter and would urge others to do the same.

I think it's a brilliant idea to use Kickstarter to record your new record, and to put your fans totally in the driver's seat. It's really exciting to see a band taking serious risks artistically and on the production side of music making as well.
