FROZEN is a delicate and unabashed excavation of the layers that construct our humanity.
Almost cinematic in its structure and intimacy - and surprisingly laced with humor, the play threads three seemingly disparate characters: Ralph, a pedophile serial killer; Agnetha, the psychologist studying him to better understand the origins and nature of extreme violence; and Nancy, the mother of one of his victims. This may sound like a soap opera stalked CSI into therapy, but the gruesome pulp of the violence, so popular in modern media, simply doesn't enter in. FROZEN centers not on the how of such grisly behavior, but on the remarkably human aspects of it.
Based on actual people and events (Bryony Lavery drew heavily on real-world sources for the mother and the psychologist as much as for Ralph, the killer). Much of the research presented in the play is ground-breaking, controversial, and currently changing the landscape of psychiatrics, law, neurology, and criminal psychology. Lavery has made public volatile but accurate data on the source of serial killing and other aggressively violent behavior: a combination of severe child abuse and physical injury to the frontal lobe. “Illness, not evil,” is responsible for most of the gruesome crimes we love to sensationalize.
Our culture has become increasingly, turbulently violent. Just last week in Seattle we were devastated by the senseless shooting of five people, including two beloved performers/musicians. Pain and disadvantage have become proud and public banners, rather than things to process, heal and fix. We isolate ourselves in our brokenness, and we look the other way when someone exposes a hurt. GESAMTKUNSTWERK believes in community, and we believe that awareness of others only increases our individual richness. We chose this play because it is a magnificent, fiery work, but we also chose it because we believe it might help us bridge the gaps in our unshared experiences.
FROZEN is not about one story. It dances through all three lives, tracing each character's isolation, stagnation, and eventual glittering resilience. The play may sound bleak on the surface, but it is magnetic, robust, beautiful.
Any theatre production incurs great costs not covered by ticket sales – space rental, production rights, rehearsal space, set materials, light, sound, costumes, props, publicity, and months of labor. Any amount we are lucky enough to reach over our goal (huzzah!) will go to paying and paying back the artists, who have donated unending time, significant talent, limitless energy, and often their own money so as to breathe life into this production.
