The Goal:

I am producing a book which inspires readers to explore their own preference for Color or Monochrome photography.  You prefer Color or You prefer Black & White...  but why?  Can you explain it clearly,,,, or is it just "the way you feel"?   

My goal is to provide a visually inspiring resource which helps guide you to that answer with Amazing Photography (photographed by yours truly), interviews and research.  After reading this book, I hope that you will be able to express clearly, why any image "x" works better for you as a Color Photograph or Black and White Photograph.  

And as a bonus, the book can stand by itself on the photographs alone.

Start the Debate!  Besides just being full of great photography and information, it can make for a wonderful conversation starter in your living room.  Browsing the photographs with someone else is sure to start a lively debate on which photos are best in color and which in monochrome.  Use it on a first date to get ride of that nasty "dead air".  Use it to dialog with your mother-in-law, with whom you never have anything to say.  You can even take it with you to your local pub and start conversations with drunk people beside you at the bar.  Ahhhhh yes,  drunk conversations.....  At least it's not politics right?

About the Book:

The book I anticipate to be about 80-100 pages and will be broken into sections by photographic subject (example: Landscapes, Portraits, Architecture, etc).  Each section will have a forward which discusses the pros and cons of color/b&w for the specific subject matter.  The material will come from personal interviews with scientists, photographers and the general public (see below).

Design and Science:

Whether you're aware or not, science plays a large role in how we perceive an image (and in turn how we react to that image).  Most of the "rules" of good design and composition can be traced to scientific reasoning.  

So to give this project a solid foundation I will be interviewing with professionals in the field of photography, biology and psychology.  The interviews will focus on how they interpret people's preference about color/b&w, based on their area of expertise. 

Public Opinion:

As mentioned I will be backing up a lot of discussion with information obtained by  interviewing professionals.  But art is not bound by "facts".  What about how an image makes "Joe Public" feel?  

Using "street surveys" and online polling, I hope to represent the general public in this discussion.  I will be presenting color/bw images to people in the street and online in large numbers in an attempt to extract meaningful quotes which represent why an individual (without design or science backgrounds to sway their opinion) likes one option over the other.

What will my donation be used for?

• Printing:  Once the project is complete I need to produce a first print run which can be used to promote the project to publishers, book vendors and photography stores.

I'm in this with you.  Don't think that I'm asking you to support my project in whole.  I have (and will continue) to invest my own money into all other expenses for this project.  Travel costs, web maintenance, website build, research materials and more.  I'm only asking that the Kickstart community help me out with the large first print expense, which will bring my completed project out into the world.

I'm only asking for enough money to reach that minimum first print run.  If the project should collect more money than required for that first printing, then the additional money will go to improving my research opportunities thus creating an even better book for you to enjoy.
