About this project
Desperation forces unconventional surf rock band TENNIS PRO on a wild journey from Seattle, Washington to Tokyo, Japan for what they believe is one last shot at international fame. After seven years as a band, with day jobs and young families at home, they still cling to the belief that they were destined to deliver their music to the nation they believe will celebrate it . Armed with a potential hit single, “Rock over Tokyo,” and a scrappy pioneering spirit, the three band members hit the streets trying to make the magic happen, in spite of cultural barriers, distractions and missteps. They are forced to lean on their individual talents—Sean as a hairstylist, Phil as a cellist, and David as a card shark—to make ends meet. In spite of themselves, their dream is infectious, and soon they have everybody believing they just might make it BIG IN JAPAN.
BIG IN JAPAN was originally pitched to a network in Nov '09. At that time high fives were given and dreams were fanned to flame. But as too good to be true stories often go, the network pulled out of funding the project. Lauded director John Jeffcoat believed in the vision enough to continue working with Tennis Pro for next to nothing (hugs, beer, and vegetarian pizza).
We are shaking our money makers to put this thing together and attempting to hold to our established production schedule. This has us flying to Tokyo in mid October '10. We are appealing to our friends, fans, families, enemies, heroes, and pets to help us on our way. We cannot move forward without plane tickets. Won't you help sponsor a sad, pasty, Seattle rocker? These funds will go directly to purchasing plane tickets for Tennis Pro (3) and production crew (7). Any amount over will go toward a place to sleep while we're over there for two and a half weeks of shooting.

Do you know who plays rock music? Tennis Pro does. You might think
they play tennis. Sometimes they do play tennis. But they don’t HAVE
to. Tennis Pro is from Seattle, but don’t let the gray clouds and sad,
bearded indie-rock populous fool you. Tennis Pro likes to have a good
time when they play, and they wish to extend that feeling on to you.
Tennis Pro doesn’t wear beards. Sometimes Tennis Pro wears beards, but
like in a totally ironic way. We’re artists. If you don’t like us,
chalk it up to just not GETTING us.
Do you know what kind of music Tennis Pro plays? Indie Power-Pop.
Melody and Anarchy. Let’s just leave it at that. If you wonder whether
Rainbow-Infused Flute-Funk or Cocktronic Retro-Core might better
describe the feelings you feel when you listen to Tennis Pro, then
blog it out, but don’t beat yourself up over it.
