About this project

HELP THE WORLD GET TEACHED!

It started with a teaching job in South Central Los Angeles, an experience that opened my eyes to the utter unfairness of our education system. The quality of education you receive in America still greatly depends on your skin color and income level.

TEACHED is a series of documentary films featuring students, parents, teachers and principals, as well as education activists like John Legend and Irasema Salcido). We have nearly 200 hours of high-def footage and over 30 interviews shot in NYC, DC and LA

"The Path to Prison" was our first short film, the next two will:

1) Let teachers do the talking, including on tricky issues like tenure

2) Look at charter schools: what are they? and why some are so good and others...not so much?

We are trying to raise $50k to fund editing, sound, music, graphics, and other production completion costs. Please contact me if you or your organization is interested in a larger, tax-deductible grant to TEACHED.

To learn more go to our website www.teached.org.

TEACHED is a labor of love. Whatever contribution you make does help and is very much appreciated. Thank you for supporting us.

My first job was teaching fourth and fifth grades in South Central, Los Angeles. In addition to the basic subjects, I tried to incorporate as much art, music and Phys Ed as I could for my students--because there wasn't ANY of this at their school. There wasn't much else happening there either.

What I saw and experienced in South Central motivated me to study Education Policy (at Stanford University) and do research abroad as a Fulbright Scholar.

I have worked for U.S. Senator Dianne Feinstein and several education reform organizations, including the Fordham Foundation, the Sallie Mae Fund, Fight For Children and Building Hope, and also volunteered at schools (teaching music-- including the recorder!-- and tutoring) and with organizations like Project Champ in DC.

TEACHED is the product of all of these experiences combined with a commitment to social justice and strong belief in the transformative power of film.
