The Battle of Red Cliffs (2012 Edition) is the new one to nine player edition of Tien Zi Que (TZQ http://www.boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/39710/tien-zi-que), the popular Mahjong card game. Like Mahjong, each game plays over several rounds as players collect sets of cards. What makes TZQ unique is that when players collect sets, they save a card from each one to form a Master Set that is used for scoring once any player has collected five or more sets.

Players can also “Peng” to form a set using two cards from their hand and a discard at the beginning of another player’s turn, they can use unique Command cards, special actions and wild cards and the game even allows for two or three player teams. Join the Battle of Red Cliffs now!

It has been a great pleasure working with E.R. Burgess and many Tien Zi Que fans such as Kristen McCarty and Simon Wilcock to prepare the Battle of Red Cliffs. It certainly is as fun as the original Tien Zi Que, and now it can be played solo or with as many as nine players. Plus, I find it a little more strategic with the team play option and Command cards.

The Battle of Red Cliffs is different than the original TZQ in many ways. Red Cliffs adds a solo option and the opportunity to play in two or three player teams. During the game, players also interact more directly through the Peng round as well as beauty, command, and event cards that carry special actions and abilities.

Four Beauties: Red Warrior, Blue Damsel, Green Maiden, and the White Lady.

At end of the round, each player scores his/her Master Set according to the score card. Red Cliffs also introduces a new score level system where players must reach a certain score level or they will drop back to the previous level.

Rewards:

The Battle of Red Cliffs comes with great Kickstarter rewards such as Allegiance cards, Command cards, and Origami Score Tower.

Reward 1 - Allegiance Expansion

The Allegiance Expansion comes with nine cards. In the beginning of a cooperative game, players are evenly divided into teams of two or three. Each player takes an Allegiance card which represents his/her team so players know who is also sworn to their alliance.

In addition, during the end of round scoring, the Allegiance cards gives players one extra colored card for scoring. How about that? :) Note: Allegiance cards do not count towards the end of round condition.

Reward 2 - Command Expansion Set #1

Command Expansion Set #1 comes with Command cards #1 to #9. The Command Expansion adds to the game for advanced play. During setup, players are given a random Command card and it gives each player a unique ability once per round for the entire game. Command cards add more strategy into the game and allow for more variation in the game.

Example: Command Card #5 - When creating a set of Beauty cards, you can take the Set action from any card in the set, not just the one you keep..

Reward 3 - Command Expansion Set #2

Command Expansion Set #2 comes with Command cards #10 to #18. When backing six or more copies of Red Cliffs, each copy will receive one Command Expansion Set #2. Backers may also pay additional $5 to purchase a set.

Command card #18 - If you have a full house, every other player drops a level before scoring.

Reward 4 - Origami Score Tower

Origami Score Tower is a uniquely-designed and beautiful board game component to add to your Battle of Red Cliffs game. It is also a great way to keep score when playing with a larger group because players can see who is leading the game from far away. Backers can order an Origami Score Tower for an additional $10.

The dimensions of the score tower are 13cm height x 10.5cm width. Please note that the Score Tower is UNFOLDED when delivered.

Reward 5 - Exclusive Mug

Babylon Pickup. If you are in the Southern California area and you know Boardgame Babylon host E.R. Burgess, you can buy at this level and arrange local delivery. Even if you don't know him but attend local gaming public gaming events, he can probably get the game to you.

Trip to Red Cliffs:

While waiting for my last Kickstarter game, Di Renjie, to arrive at a Shanghai warehouse, I boarded a train to visit Red Cliffs.

I also got the chance to try out the local snacks! This photo shows a cold noodle dish that can be served with many different ingredients in it. I added everything that is NOT spicy. ;)
