UPDATE 8/29/13: NOW FEATURED IN GOLF DIGEST'S "NEW STUFF" SECTION! While the goal has been met, every donation counts as the latest stretch goal is $3,500. This novel is different. It was not written by someone who majored in English in college. It was not written by an esteemed author or anyone with even a high school degree. It was written by a fifteen year old who wanted to share a story with the world and could not find a place to put it. After tens of thousands of words, countless edits and peer-edits by a group of teenagers, a novel began to emerge. This story, Taking the Course, is that of a boy growing up in New York City with the desire to golf. Follow him as he goes through the process of finding himself, quarreling with his school, gathering support, making a team, developing a crush, and then nearly losing it all.
My goal on Kickstarter is simple. I want to be able to publish my book as an eBook and copyright my work by registering it with the Library of Congress. If I receive more than I am expecting I will have the opportunity to give back and support those who have helped me. The book has been written in full and teenage friends of mine have edited my completed novel without compensation. They have spent countless hours discussing with me every last sentence of this novel as well as creating the video for this project and I believe that they deserve to be compensated for their hard work. I have elected to forgo my traditional publishing options in favor of self-publishing because I would like to get this out as quickly as possible and to make it clear that I do not want to profit off of this novel. Money is not the object but in this case an unlikely possible byproduct of getting the novel out there to the world. I want to be clear that the novel is my work in whole. No one wrote any part of this story for me as I wrote all 50,000+ words myself. I did receive help from my grandfather on parts once I had completed the original draft, as he read the novel before agreeing to write the forward, as well as his willingness to appear in any promotions for me. My grandmother has promised to be accountable for this Kickstarter project. However, that is all the help I have received, which is why I am now turning to the Kickstarter community.
Here's what I am offering: The chance to be a part of something different. To be able to help a young person trying to started as a writer. To see and understand what teenagers are capable of. To be confident in honesty, that not only am I risking my name if this fails to exceed expectations, but also the name of someone much more well-known than I am who has worked his entire life to develop a reputation of integrity in journalism. I want to be independent and this is my start. Thank you.
If we reach $1200- I will be able to publish the eBook, copyright my work and guarantee all rewards.
If we reach $1500- I will be able to run periodic promotional days on the Amazon Marketplace where the eBook is able to be downloaded for free by everyone.
If we reach $2000- I will be able to give back to those whose stories made it into this book, helping them save some money for college.
If we reach $5000- I will be able to publish the book in hard copy.
Thank you so much!
Risks and challenges Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
Taking the Course will be published immediately following the full completion of the Kickstarter project. I am a first time author but I have found many excellent guidelines to understanding the Amazon Kindle Store (Note: You do not need to have a Kindle to read this eBook, as it will be available to be read on phones, tablets, and computers as well). I promise to work my hardest to ensure that all rewards are met within an immediate timeframe. It may be difficult for me, as I will be starting my junior year in high school this September but my goal is to complete the rewards during weekends and school breaks, hopefully finishing by Thanksgiving 2013 with most rewards. It is possible that the burden of schoolwork will increase, in which case it will be a delicate balancing act but I promise that I will devote myself to helping those who have helped me. I consider every single word I write here to be a promise to everyone who reads it. My first priority is always to keep my word and that will motivate me to complete this project as soon as I can and to the highest standard.
If the goal is exceeded, all remaining proceeds will be set aside to go firstly to my friends who have helped me by editing the novel and creating the video for this project. Following that, I will continue to promote the book and use the funds to give the book away to teenagers that may be interested in reading it but are unable, for whatever reason. If we are lucky enough to raise significantly above the goal, I will be able to publish the book in hard copy and give a copy away to every single person who has donated to this project.
Yes, the book has been written and edited in full and will be available soon after the close of the Kickstarter project.
Since Kickstarter does not allow for those of us under 18 to launch by ourselves, I enlisted the oldest and wisest people that I know to guarantee my responsibility for this project. However, all work on this page and on the book was done by me.
The book will be available on the Kindle Store starting August 23rd. Kickstarter contributors will be emailed a link on the 22nd which will be good for a gift certificate worth one free copy.
My friends Jessica and Joyce Huang came up with the idea for it and directed the piece while Rick Mortenson, Jonah Philips, and Andrew Settleman starred in it. They were all so helpful to me in the days leading up to this project and I will be forever thankful to them for their willingness to help me.
