A purpose built art piece to enable creative rope play and beautiful suspensions for public enjoyment.
About Suspended Animation
In 2008, a small, intrepid, and stunningly naive band of adventurers set out to bring something new to Black Rock City. We had 15 camp members on the playa that year, and 11 of them were Burning Man virgins. The crew really came together that week: we made up procedures on the spot for handling crowds that nobody expected, we tied until our fingers literally bled. It was a classic Burning Man experience. By the end of the week we were both euphoric and exhausted, stunned by what we had accomplished.
Over the past 5 years we have expanded our camp: doubled the size of our crew, built a performance pavilion, brought in show lighting, reenforced our sound system. All of this has been done to create the most welcoming, friendly, and awesome environment for the people who come to visit us.
This year, we have something a bit more ambitious in mind: Adrian's Canopy
Our intent has always been to take a technically demanding and intricate art form, and turn it into a sensual and beautiful experience. For 2012 we have commissioned Seattle artist and suspension rigger (and Black Rock City Hardware member) Geo to design and construct a one-of-a-kind art piece for the Suspended Animation pavilion.
More than just a bed, Adrian's Canopy offers a uniquely variable and configurable environment for a rope-tastic experience. Twin arcs of steel are connected with a series of load-bearing rods. It stands at a show-stopping 6ft 6in high and 5ft 2in wide. While the entire frame is suspension worthy, a specially constructed triangle truss at the apex of the arch will be especially strong and intended for full suspensions. To multiply the possible configurations, the frame will be punctuated with threaded inserts, allowing various attachment points to be arranged to allow for creative rigging geometry.
To enhance the ambiance, Adrian's Canopy will feature it's own dedicated lighting system with three fully controllable lighting instruments and a dedicated programmable light board.
Our crew is delighted by the design of this amazing piece of art, and cannot wait for it to host guests on the playa and in the Pacific Northwest.
What does my donation pay for?
If we make our goal, we will be able to pay for the raw materials (lots and lots of steel), custom part construction, dedicating lighting instruments, logic cables, light board, shop time, and modest stipend for the artist. What will you do with money beyond your goal?
In addition to Adrian's Canopy, we are upgrading the decor of our camp’s main space this year: all new soft goods, new curtains for additional shade, additional lighting instruments, upgrades to the sound system. We are also building a heated shower system that visitors to our camp can use in creative ways. All in all we are running a budget deficit in the thousands of dollars, and anything we bring in beyond our fundraising goal will go directly to improving camp infrastructure.
