Public Summer: Library of Immediacy will be a temporary architectural installation built on Governors Island with dynamic programming.
** Our June 10th design charrette was a success. Our winning proposal was chosen! Amy Chang and Seoyoung Shin won with Fictional Figures. They will be building their design for an ongoing, democratically curated installation and public programming by The People's Library and artist collective DADDY. Please click here for all the details!
We are SUPERFRONT. With your help, this summer a winning designer will get to build a temporary structure on Governors Island to host dynamic public events.
We are a nonprofit organization based in Brooklyn, NY. Our mission is to promote architectural experimentation and creative interdisciplinary exchange. Since 2008, SUPERFRONT has created exhibitions, public installations, architects-in-residence programs, events and print-on-demand publications with talented artists, architects, musicians and community activists in Brooklyn, Detroit, and Los Angeles.
This summer we are coming to Governors Island, NY with
PUBLIC SUMMER: LIBRARY OF IMMEDIACY, in partnership with FIGMENT.
This is a chance for young designers to produce a temporary installation on Governors Island for curated public programming. On June 10th, designers will only have 2 hours on-site to draft a proposal in response to the surprise summer programming that SUPERFRONT has in store. Designers will be able to concentrate on concept and strategy. This will level the playing field for designers who have minimal time or less sophisticated software or rendering tools to devote to unpaid competitions. The winners will get to build their temporary structure on Governors Island that will be open all season long. Governors Island saw hundreds of thousands of visitors last year, and this year we expect the same. The Library of Immediacy will be a place for you to go, for everyone.
And we need your help.
Your donations will go towards funding the construction of the PUBLIC SUMMER, which includes:
-transportation of the project
-buying a solar generator for our weekend’s public programs
-maintenance costs for an outdoor season
-and everything in between
Why a library? As we visit our own public libraries less and less, we want to redefine what it means to create a free and open space to exchange knowledge and ideas, and a place for people to gather.
Stay tuned! After June 10th, we’ll be announcing the winning designers and our partners who will be leading dynamic programs every weekend from July 21st through September.
Thanks for your help. Stop by and see us this summer.
