To photograph and document over 75 strange and unique "Roadside Attractions" in 34 different states in the U.S.
Strange Journey is a photographic project documenting the obscure and often unknown oddities that make the U.S. so unique. These wonders are gradually becoming less common across the country--some being deconstructed, moved to private property or destroyed through the natural occurrences of time. The mysteries surrounding many of these sites has always fascinated me; each one more different and unique than the last. With your support, I will set out in June of 2012 to photograph and document over 75 oddities in 34 states. Along with the oddities, I will also be photographing unique individuals and strange places I encounter along the way. The end result becoming a photographic portfolio of some of Americas lesser-known anomaly's.
I plan on taking my time photographing each site. I love to shoot about an hour or two before sundown, which gives me a small time frame to work with. This means that I might spend two or three days at one site waiting for the perfect light, but the results would be stunning.

- Mamiya RB67 Medium Format Camera
- Toyo-View 4x5 Large Format Field Camera
- Canon 35mm Camera
- Canon s95 Digital Camera (blog/website/test shots)
(Ames Pyramid, Wyoming)
Funding is separated into four main areas which are...
- Film & Film Processing
Although I will be driving a fuel efficient vehicle, gas will still be the number one expense on the trip. The trip will be spread out over 34 states, spanning across the entire country--from Arizona to Idaho to North Dakota, up into New England and all around the Central and Southern United States. Food will be purchased from grocery stores (i.e. sandwiches, healthy snacks, trail mix) along with water and other healthy drinks. I plan on using camp sites as much as possible--only staying in a motel when absolutely necessary. Other expenses include buying film, processing the film, printing beautiful photographs for all the supporters in those donation brackets and finally shipping charges when it comes time to mail out rewards to all supporters.

Is anyone going with you?
Yes. Her name is Olive, and she is a 4-year-old Husky/Boxer mix. She is as much in love with traveling as I am, and when I told her about my idea she went nuts. Her duties will include keeping me company, being the official map reader, and guarding all valuables.
Why should I support your project?
This is the perfect project for me. All I want to do every day is photograph and travel. I am dedicated to creating an astonishing body of work from this project and giving all who support me a lot more than they expected. These places are beautiful and strange; many are enigmas without explanations, and that's what makes them so fascinating.
Ultimately I want to spread interest in the existence of these sites in hopes that people will set out on their own journeys to see these places for themselves. Even better would be to inspire someone to create their own unique oddity.
Are you going to keep me updated during the journey?
Of course! There are several places you can follow my journey from...
- Instagram (Search: StrangeJourney) Here I will be updating daily with quick snapshots while I'm on the road.
- Tumblr (Search: wesleyscummings.tumblr.com) This is where I will do daily blog posts to keep everyone updated. I will provide photos, videos and stories detailing most of the trip.
What are your rewards for supporters?
To start, everyone who donates $10 or more will get a hand-written postcard from one of the attractions during the journey. After that, anyone who donates $25 or more will receive a beautiful photograph of one of the attractions signed by me. There are also other rewards such as awesome souvenirs from some of the attractions. To get specifics, such as size and quantity of the prints, please refer to the column on the right. Even if you can only donate $1, please know that it is very much appreciated and that you are still an important part of this project.
What attractions are you going to visit and photograph?
While there are over 75 oddities I have already planned out, I will also be photographing the things in between as well. The more scarce, lesser-known oddities that haven't yet achieved that legendary status. The entire list will most likely go through some revisions leading up to the start of the trip, but here are some good ones I will definitely be visiting...
- Casa Grande Ruins (Arizona)
- Slum Theme Park (Georgia)
- Oasis Bordello (Idaho)
- UFO Welcome Center (South Carolina)
- Cadillac Ranch (Texas)
- Forevertron (Wisconsin)
- Upside-Down White House (even the inside!) (Wisconsin)
- Ames Pyramid (Wyoming)
- Giant Leg Sundial & Nudist Camp (Indiana)
- Minister's Tree House (Tennessee)
(Turtle on a Snowmobile, Bottineau, ND)
Can I suggest an attraction for you to photograph?
Absolutely! While I have over 75 places already in mind, I know there are many I still don't know about, and I would love for you to share them with me.
What do you plan to do with the photographs once you have finished the journey?
Once all supporters receive their rewards, I will begin the process of exhibiting the photographs. Specific galleries are unclear at the moment, but toward the end of the project I hope to have attracted interest from several gallery owners. If the project does exhibit, all supporters will be recognized by name during the showing.
That's about it! If you have any questions or suggestions about the project, please don't hesitate to share them with me. I would love to hear them!
