Build a fully transportable life-size museum quality replica of the Stonehenge monument, that every American can experience.
Stonehenge. One of
the most ancient and puzzling wonders left in the modern world. Is it a
prehistoric calendar? A temple for the gods? A place for sacrifice? Or just a
large hiding place for the Pandorica? A monument of such amazing wonder
and beauty should be seen by as many people as possible, don’t you think?
However, visiting Stonehenge is much harder than it seems, and only a
limited number of people WORLDWIDE see it each year, and even then, only a
fraction of those people purchase the special access pass which is required to let
them walk among the stones. Imagine all the hassle that goes into seeing
this epic monument.
Now, imagine just having to travel to a museum near you to walk amongst
its legendary beauty.
That is exactly what this project will do. Its purpose is to bring its magnificence to YOU, so that EVERYONE can experience it, not just the select few. We will be creating a portable, life-size, exact replica of the entirety of Stonehenge.
The same passion, courage, and damn near insanity that captured the attention of the original builders has captured ours. We are planning to build it from EPS architectural foam with a hard coat finish. This is the same technique used in commercial and residential building construction. This is NOT styrofoam. Each piece of the exhibit will be hand carved from large blocks of the foam and then hand-painted to ensure the creation of an exact replica of the actual corresponding stones. This will be the first life-size replica and the world’s most accurate representation of the monument. We have also designed a hinged-base mounting system that will allow the exhibit to be transportable and easily set up at different venues without the use of any supports or heavy equipment.
The contributions raised will be put towards the construction of the physical exhibit, which will then be displayed all across the country. We plan to tour the exhibit at a variety of venues, including art and science museums, planetariums, music festivals, universities, parks, and other large locations where a variety of people will be able to experience it. This will be one of the largest touring sculpture exhibits in America, and we want YOU to be a part of it. At each showing, we hope to include several days of celebration, with music, dancing, food, bonfires, art exhibitions, etc., and any other suggestions you might have to make the most of YOUR Stonehenge experience.
We have a team of dedicated staff and volunteers with very diverse skill sets who are committed to making this project successful. Our goal is to raise $38,400 to build the physical exhibit, and have it completed and ready to show by the Winter Solstice on December 12, 2012.
Follow us on our journey of foam construction, educational anthropology, and neolithic monkey business.
We will set it up for the Winter Solstice (December 21, 2012) in Tallahassee. We have a couple of potential sites, and we will keep you updated once we select our final spot!
